Ironing Board Cover? Have any of you ever made your own cover for your ironing board? If so, what is a good material to use? I had to buy an over the door ironing board because our craft space is small and I thought it would be better. I do like it but I hate the cover that came with it. It's just a base model from Wal Mart and you can tell the fabric is not that great. I was thinking I could use it as a template and make another to slip over but I wasn't sure what to use. Any ideas? Thanks! :yorkietal |
A cotton or linen fabric. They are the higher temperatures on your iron's heat setting, so they hold up best to repeated use. |
I agree...........muslin is good to i think. i did make my own but need to redo in the correct fabric...i used an outdoor cotton. |
I have an "antique" wooden ironing board that I cover with a layer of cotton quilted fabric (an old matress pad) and 2 layers of old 100% cotton sheets. Works so well, it lets me do very fine turning work because of the slight grab to the sheeting. |
Thank you everyone! I appreciate it. :) |
You may have already seen this, Aymee, but it came across my fb page and I thought about your thread here. I think this is neat. Quilted Ironing ... by Seraphym HM | Quilting Pattern |
You'll find special fabrics in just about any of the bigger fabric supply places made specifically to withstand high temperatures ;) |
I would suggest an regular outdoor or heavy cotton and line it with some batting material. |
You can buy heavy duty padding to make your own... I needed to add some as the ready made just weren't doing the job. As for the cover... what do you need it for? I made two extra covers in a fabric I like (actually old sheets, lol) so I can wash them frequently, they go over the store bought covers (2) and the extra padding, lol. (Yes, I have a very plush ironing surface). Little triangles (from the metal board surface) kept showing up on DH's work shirts, almost like they were embossed! Cute, but really not a good thing, lol. Oh, and I just layer it all on then throw my home made cover on it to hold everything in place. Works well for me. |
Joann has a section of fabric to make ironing board covers. It's with utility fabrics I bought one of these and I haven't pulled out the ironing board since Accessory Workshop - Hobby Table Ironing Cover |

This is so beautiful |
If you make your own, use 100% cotton batting because the poly batting will not hold up to the heat of the iron. I made a table top ironing board to use in my sewing room. I used a 2'x3' board, covered it with cotton batting and cotton fabric. Similar to this: |

My mother and sister taught me, but I have learned a lot from Jenny's Youtubes. |
