Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Another one bites the dust.... Well it finally happened today. I was working on a dress and my machine went kaput. It's been giving me trouble and I knew a newer machine purchase was near. I was hoping she would hold out a little longer but it didn't. It was just a basic starter machine by Brother. My mom bought it for me as a gift 9 years ago. Even though it was plain, I grew to love that little machine. It only cost my mom $60 on Black Friday. It was a wonderful starter machine. I looked into having it repaired if possible. But the cost to look and repair would be more than the original price so we just figured to get a new one when the time came. I recycled a few of the parts off of it just in case. The rest went to my dads shop. I imagine he will tinker with it for any parts he might could use. Lol Anyways, in the meantime Mom is letting me use her machine. It's by a brand called White. It has many more features than my little machine. She's had it a long time but rarely used it. I'm almost afraid of using it. Seeing as it doesn't belong to me I sure don't want to mess anything up but I am going to use it for a bit while I decide on a new machine. That's where you guys come in. Any recommendations? I don't want to get a basic one again. I'd like something a little nicer, more heavy duty, but not too expensive. I'm willing to invest up to $500 on one but for us that is a good chunk of change. So no matter how much I spend, I want to invest wisely. Any one care to share their machine or recommendations? I'd sure appreciate it! I want an embroidery machine also. I saw combo sewing and embroidery machines but wasn't sure about that. I was under the impression that a good embroidery machine would cost me more than I need to spend right now. Thanks for your help!

| Too bad you're not closer to me, I would happily give you one of my machines I think any machine you pick will be great. The larger Joann stores will let you sit and play with the machines. Costco always has good deals, and their return policy is awesome. I think you'll find an excellent machine with your budget. Good luck!! |

| My grandma is the seamstress I like to quilt. To me those are 2 different worlds but when my ole singer gave out. She purchased me a used Viking. It's a tank! I love it. I can sew layers and never stop. Check around your local sew shops and sit down. They like the larger Joann's let you try the machines out. Best of luck. |

| The newer Singers seem to be nice. I personally prefer the MUCH older Singers. My favorite machine is a 401A,manufactured in 1958. You can look it up on Ebay (I do not recommend purchasing a machine that you did not test),but you can see what all it does. There are built in stitches and extra cams to make more decorative stitches. The buttonhole attachment makes the nicest buttonholes. My other machine is a PFAFF 7550 it is almost 18 yrs old. I am using my mother's 7550 because I ran mine into the ground. Last fall I checked out the middle of the road Berninas, fell in love and then fell ill when I figured out that they were $3000. If you get a new machine,I would suggest getting one from an actual dealer. They usually offer "getting to know you" lessons on all machines and warranties if you have a problem. I am sorry that your machine gave up. Its like an old friend going away. |

| I don't want to necessarily recommend a "brand" but I would suggest that you purchase a machine from someone who is willing to not charge you to teach you how to use it completely. I spent a LOT of money on all my machines but I knew right away that having a machine that I didn't know how to use fully was a waste of money. So, my two cents...realize that there isn't any sewing machine today that is made in the USA, so don't rack your brain over that. My favorite "brand" is BabyLock. Because the woman I purchased from has taken hours of her own time to help me learn how to maximize my machines. She helps me through email and over the phone. The machines are expensive but I do know that BabyLock also has lesser expensive machines that will include some embroidery options and built in designs. Just go take a look if nothing else. Whatever you decide to go with, I'm sure you will love it!!! Good luck!!

| When I needed a new machine I went Sears and bought a Kenmore. Janome makes Kenmore and feature for feature the price of Kenmore is much lower. My Kenmore if it were labeled Janome would have cost me 800 dollars, I only paid 385. I have been very very happy with my sewing machine. It is computerized and has some excellent features. I suggest looking at different machines and at which features you feel would be good to have and make a feature wishlist. Then it's simply a matter of best any for your buck. Happy shopping, let us know what you get

| I love my Brother PE770, but it is just an embroidery machine. Brother makes a machine that does both. I also have a Brother PRW sewing machine, but I'm honestly not impressed with it. Like some of the others have stated, I love the older Singers. I hope to get a better sewing machine soon, so I will be following this thread to see what is recommended and what you decide to get. I want one with a larger arm in order to machine quilt. I hear great things about Vikings and Janome, so I will be checking into those.

| I have an Brother 6800, it's a sewing and embroidery combined machine. I love this machine. I ended up buying this one about 8 months ago for the embroidery features. It does all basic sewing stitches and hooks up to my computer so I can download any pes patterns. Like you I had a $500 budget and found the best deal online at Wal-Mart. I did look and the price has gone up but wait for a sale. I have found the instruction book it came with and the brother website to be sufficient for using this machine as it is very user friendly. Before this I had a used 1960s model Kenmore that I used for over 25 years and it is still going strong although it is now in the closet. |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Thank you all so much for your feedback! You guys are great! I've been looking online and in store. I went to Joann first. All they had at my local store were Singer but the associate did let me play with them. Then I looked at Hancock. They had several on display on a shelf but they were not to where you can test them out. I then went to Sears and was flabbergasted when the associate told me they no longer sell them in store, only online. I looked at Walmart both in person and online. I checked out qvc and hsn. Next I want to go to a local sewing center to see. So many choices out there. It's fun but overwhelming. Lol
