| A few questions on supplies My soon-to-be new puppy is due to be born a week from today. My spouse and I have been spending the last few weeks getting supplies ready even though it will be another 2-3 months minimum before we can bring him home from the breeder but we want to be prepared. So far it's going well although we do have a question/concern about the food and water dish. With a yorkie puppy being so small and having tiny legs and heads, we're having trouble finding dishes that would be shallow enough for him to get his head over the lip and into the bowl. Not so much food as that can be put onto a flat plate, but for a water bowl, we'll need something that holds enough water for him to drink. We're also looking at doggie play pens. He will be confined to the bathroom when we're not at home but when we are home (but not actively engaging with him) he'll need to be confined in a puppy pen so he's still "around us" and not shut away in the bathroom. All the puppy pens we're finding don't have bottoms; it's more like a circular baby gate thing. Until he's potty trained and doesn't spill is food/water, what do you put underneath to protect the floors? Just cover the entire area with pottypads or a blanket or? thanks |

| For water bowl any small glass or ceramic(no plastic) dessert dish will work until he is big enough to use a regular doggie bowl. For pens the most popular are Iris or xpens, no flooring with these, use piddle pads to cover exposed floor. I will say this, expect a big mess, the pads may be balled up, shredded, scattered about when pup is left unattended. They love to play with the pads no matter how may toys are in the pen.

| You could go to Lowe’s or any home improvement store and by a sheet of linoleum cut to the size you need to put under the pen. I don’t know how big he will be but Joey was 3 pounds when I got him and he was fine just drinking out of the small stainless steel bowls they sell at pet stores.

| When my little Fergie first came home, 3lbs. I had found some nice ceramic bowls, dog bowls that came straight up on the sides, only about 2 inc.. Wish I could remember where I got them, it’s been 16yrs., and I have a new puppy coming too. Something my breeder has on her website site is, puppeepooplace.com worth a look. Price may be high but for new moms and dads it has good ideas, it does solve the water concern. Amazon has lots of stuff, most playpens don’t have a bottom, my Fergie had two litters, in the whelping box I used these pads like you use underneath a Senior Citizens on the Bed. They were cloth fabric on one side and waterproof on the other. Easy to wash, I still have those stored away. I found them on e-bay very cheap back then, 12 yrs. ago. They sell them for dogs now, on Amazon. They’re made by PupPee, they’re called Dog Pee Pads, washable reusable. One thing I would say about leaving the pup in the bathroom while you’re away, you would be surprised how much damage a little tiny baby can do, plus you want it Safe. I hope I was able too help, ask me anything, I might have an answer. Good Luck 😊 |

| Adding my information for anyone looking for more ideas for new puppy setup. For a pen, we used this one: https://www.chewy.com/iris-4-panel-e...play/dp/183628 We choose this one mostly because the breeder used it. The breeder added 2 extra panels to make half of the area a potty area, and the other half "living" space. When JakJak came home, we knew he would be taken to go potty in the designated potty space away from the pen. His potty pads are kept in the bathroom for his use. We used, and still use, the 4 panel option as is. Has worked great! A bit of warning, if your little guy is tall, or on the bigger side, this may not work. The sides are not that tall. JakJak was just shy of 2.5 lbs when he came home, and just shy of 4 lbs now (5 months later). I'll try to add pictures later. As for lining, we use 2 of these: https://www.target.com/p/bed-protect...3/-/A-53172175 underneath one of these: https://www.target.com/p/fuzzy-blank...42#lnk=sametab Both of the above items were originally purchased when Kaji, my yorkie, was sick and had lost his ability to walk. The lining was super easy to throw in the wash, it never stained, although it is now covered in fuzzies from the blanket. Both withstood lots of washes, and lots of accidents from a very sick yorkie, and then by a tiny puppy that was still learning the ropes. I still use this combo to this day. JakJak is 95% potty trained, but I use the liners anyway in case he ever spills his water that's in the pen. I did find a tiny bowl set. Very short stand, nice and shallow, but I can't remember from where.

I used kitchen shelf liner to place under my 2 Yorkies Food and Water bowls. Works wonderfully. I actually found a thicker brown liner, substantial in thickness. I could just clean it in the bathroom Sink. I still have some after 16yrs.. This is why I wanted to clarify. Thank You 😊 | |
