| Buying a Yorkie - - need help Hello~ This is my first post here. I currently do not own a yorkie. . .yet. I have always loved them and would love to have one. And at the same time do not make near enough money to spend hundreds or thousands on one. During my search. . .I have recently come upon 2 possibilities close to my price range and that are local enough for me to drive to. First is in a town very close to me. They have a smal little boy 3 1/2 weeks. But he has a weak knee problem. She will be taking him to the vet shortly and will be asking about the long term care for him and let me know. Second is an older female. 8 years old and her breeder has retired her from breeding puppies. He is sending me a photo in a few days. I'm at loss here. |

| Hi. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. My opinion on the issue: I wouldn't buy a dog with a health problem because he is cheaper. You will likely end up spending more money in the long run caring for the dog. I do, however, have a lot of respect for people who have the money to pay huge vet bills for luxating patella (common in yorkies) and so on because they want to. I wouldn't be able to afford to do it right now. Do you know how many litters the 8 year old has had? Did you check out petfinder? There are a ton of Yorkies on there for free or a nominal fee of around $75 bucks or so. If you want to give me your city, I can find you one!

| Thanks for your reply. . . I definately have concerns about the little guy with the weak knees. She sent me a picture of him and he is sooooo cute though. She's also told me to come and look at him if I want, but I know if I do that I will want to take him home RIGHT then regardless of his knee problem. I know some people that have pomeranians and have spent several thousands on knee surgury for one of them. There's no way I could do that. I haven't asked how many litters the female has had. . . never thought about that. Is that something I should ask? Both dogs are the same price (250.00). But I've been looking for a long time now and these 2 are the only ones that I have found remotely close to what I could pay for one. Most places they charge over 500.00 and it's just not fesible for me to pay that on my income. Am I being "cheap" (for lack of a better word) to not be willing to pay such a high amount that I just want for a pet. . .no breeding, showing, etc. I'm not even concerned about it being registered with papers or having so called "Champion bloodlines". I just want one for a pet!!!! |

| I have checked Petfinder.com. A lot of them that you showed were from Hutchinson's "Bless the Beast canine placement program". I have already contacted them by phone and they have an application process (which isn't a problem) a loooong waiting list for their yorkies. I did recently find one on there in Northern OK. So I called on her and she was still available but since I lived a couple of hours away they will not hold dogs. They said if someone came in to adopt her before I got there, that she would be gone. I tried to pay over the phone and they wouldn't let me do that. The other dogs on there are also sooo cute, but I've had my heart set on a Yorkie. Guess I"m just too picky. |

| I think it depend on you. Puppies are cute and you can't help but fall in love with one. She seems to be pretty open about his problem but you must understand you are not going to save money by getting him. You may spend thousands of dollars on surgery, therapy, and vet bills to correct his weak knee. If you can't afford that you are better off looking for a more expensive healthy puppy than a cheaper puppy with a problem. A older dog is nice. It has it benefits. They are more likely to not chew things up and easier to potty train if they are not. Less maintenance and you don't have to worry about all those initial puppy shots. Plus a yorkie can live up to 15 years old. But keep in mind at 8 years old, she may start to develop problems due to old age. Are you up to taking care of those problems if it comes up? I'm sorry to sound negitive. It's just things you have to think about. |

| No offense to the negativity. All of those things have crossed my mind and I feel negative myself about the situation. So that's why I have the questions about both of them. Maybe I'm just in over my head thinking that I can have a 'perfect little yorkie' for little money. |

I don't mean to entrude but like jabrbx I wanted a yorkie as well as a pet just because I love them. Could you explain to me why I would need to know how many litters a pup has had in the past and what is too many and why? Thanks a bunch. Gizmo's mom | |

| Hi Gizmo's mom, I think that if an 8 year old Yorkie has been overbred she may be more prone to health problems. It also seems like a long time to be breeding a Yorkie (or any breed for that matter) before placing her in a home as a pet.

| Hi, Try looking around for a larger male. I've got one who is going to be ten pounds that I got real cheap. He's healthy and AKC registered, just too big to sell to the people who want little yorkies. The lady I got mine from doesn't have anymore right now. |
