Looking for a Yorkie for Christmas in Houston
 

Hi there!

I would like to get a Yorkie for my 4-year-old son for Christmas, and I'm having no luck finding any in the Houston area. If anyone has any ideas on who or where I can find one by Christmas time, could you please let me know? I have no preference on male or female, although I would like to have a female since I'm a little out-numbered in my house having a husband and 2 sons ;)

not to be a downer - but for a 4 year old - a yorkie isn't the best breed to be looking at - maybe something bigger and a little more sturdy ?

at that age he'd be happy with ANY dog I'm sure - there are plenty in shelters that would make awesome pets for a child -

Hey Amber! :wavey: Welcome to YorkieTalk! :welcome4: Yorkies are a wonderful breed, however, they are extremely delicate and are generally not good around children. Are you sure you want to get a 4 year old a yorkie? I know my yorkies get injured enough as it is and we have NO children. Just something to consider before you make a final decision. :)

This is SO true! Your 4 year old would be so happy to get ANY dog. I would visit your local shelter, take your son with you, and let him pick out a puppy. Your son would really enjoy a dog that will be a little bigger that he can rough-house with and such.

Thanks for thet tip :) I'm the one who wants the Yorkie breed, and we really wanted something small so that we could keep it inside since we live in a wooded community. I also have a 4-month-old, and I don't think a bigger dog would be practical with a baby that will soon be crawling around. My husband is extremely allergic to cats, so that is out of the question, and my little boy wants a pet so bad, that recently he has resorted to collecting bugs in a cup, lol. He's had everything from a fish, hermet crabs, spiders, turtles and a praying mantis. So we would really like to get him something that he can pet and cuddle at least and a small dog that we know isn't mixed in with something like a pitbull or chow. ;)

Welcome to YT!!! You will learn alot about this breed here! One of the most important thing to remember about Yorkies is that they are extremely delicate and can easily get hurt by just about everything (doors, furniture and even people stepping on them) I love the breed but before you make a commitment please consider the possibility of endless trips to the vet for just about everything. I am sure your son would be thrilled with a puppy, not just a yorkie. Just something to think about...:)

What about a Jack Russell Terrier? They are small yet sturdy. That is what my family had when I was growing up. Or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? They are still small, toy, dogs, but are just a little bigger than yorkies are.

Jack R's - Cocker Spaniels - there are lots of bigger breeds that are still very small in dogs size - we have a cocker spaniel too :thumbup: and I never worry about her around kids - she knows when to get out of the way - and she's big enough at 27 lbs that I don't worry about her being stepped on or worse - fallen on and small enough that she'd do well in an apartment if I lived in one.

I can totally relate wanting to get your son the best present ever!! I have been there myself where even if I have my hands full I still go out of my way for my daughter no matter what. Yorkies require more than the average care time. They need daily brushing, weekly baths, cleaning in order for them not to get a viral allergy or a skin one. I myself being a new yorkie owner and after reading tons of books did not expect to be such a commitment as it has become. I have had to set on an average at least 1 hour of my every day doing things for Ninna that I would have had time for mylself if she wasn't around (Feeding, cleaning eyes & ears, brushing hair and teeth, and one-on-one playing (these guys need it) And that is not counting all the other part of the day spent toguether!! :animal-pa
Just a thought....my best friend has a mini doberman for her 5 year old son who barely weights 5 pounds at 2 years old. She is so sweet, non-allergenic and makes a great baby-sitter for him. Even sleeps in his room and "protects" him at all times. She is super smart, is potty trained and extremely loving with kids and other pets and Zero-Maintenance. They are very cute toguether and Kaluah has made the "best" pet they can ever have! :aimeeyork

Your 4 year old son is going to want to constantly pick the yorkie up and tote it around. If he were to ever accidentally drop the yorkie, it would be a goner.

jack Russell is what I was thinking too. or a pug. Those are sturdy little guys. My pug weighs twenty five pounds and is the biggest cuddle bunny you ever saw. no way should a four year old be given a yorkie. BTW, welcome to YT.

A min-pin is a GREAT idea, too! My friend has one and they are small yet sturdy little dogs that are so easy to maintain. No brushing, grooming, baths, etc.

How about a Wire-haired fox terrier....

If you have your heart set on a Yorkie, just make sure that it will be a teapot. There are several threads on here about how wonderful and sturdy their bigger Yorkies are. The puppies we have should weigh 7-9 pounds full grown but I know that there are even larger ones out there somewhere.
