Yorkie for Disabled Child & Family Dear YT Members, I am posting this thread on behalf of a dear friend of mine. My friend, Chris, has a 9 year old beautiful boy who has spinal bifida. He has been married for many years to his wife, who stays at home to take care of their son. When I told Chris that I had finally gotten my beloved Yorkie, he almost got tears in his eyes. After talking with him for a while, I began to understand the meaning of his tears. Chris's wife and son had been wanting a dog for almost 2 years now. However, the little boy has his heart set on a Yorkie. Unfortunately, with thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills coming in each year - this has left little room to spend a few thousand dollars on a puppy. Their son has struggled since he took his first breath, but is a true fighter. He has been in a wheelchair his whole life - but Chris and his wife have tried their best to give their son a normal life. He actually goes in for a 12 hour surgery today, and will be bed-ridden on his stomach for several weeks. He will then have another surgery in the next few months. We are praying for him and his family. Chris and his wife have given thier lives to taken care of their growing boy. They cut their plans of more children short to focus on their son. My main point of this thread is to see if there is anyone out there who has or knows if there are places to get Yorkie puppies for disabled families at a lower cost. While they are more than capable of caring for the puppy (stay at home mom and the son is 9 and constantly watched, no agressive behavior) and paying for vet and food, etc - Chris is not able to fork out $2000 (going cost in the Northern Virginia area) for the puppy. He has looked at shelters for over a year now, regularly, to see if anything comes in. He has yet to find the precious puppy to bring home to his family. Please, if there is anyone with information on this subject - please leave a post! Chris is a hard working man, working with me at Booz Allen Hamilton (consulting firm). With the holidays coming, it would be so amazing for him to be able to show his son that his dream has finally come true. He wants a Yorkie more than anything in the world - and I thought YT might now just how we could help him. Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and please pray for his son as he begins his road to recovery from surgery today. Thank you again!!! :animal36 |
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on this? Thanks! |
Just a thought...do you think that an older Yorkie (1 year +) would be better for Chris's son? I have two 5 month old pups right now, and have a 2 year old Yorkie back home in CT, and let me tell you...when I had my wisdom teeth out, the 2 year old was just amazing. She had matured to the point where she didn't need to constantly play and play and play...I couldn't really hang out with the babies because I was in so much pain and they were so active. My 2 year old just laid by me and cuddled. This is just my experience, but Yorkie puppies are a LOT of work :) Maybe you could get an older Yorkie from a breeder who is phasing out one of their babies they used for breeding. |

Ah...Booz Allen, I work for GIS, we do some business with you guys, I think. Maybe they could try a Yorkie rescue...lots of lonely dogs looking for a good home and adoption fees would probably be closer to their price range. Just a suggestion. |
In Kansas City, we have an organization called "Dream Factory" and I've also heard of "Make a Wish Foundation"....they help make dreams and wished of disabled kids come true. I don't know if you have any type organizations like this in your area that could help....might be worth a try. I know the Dream Factory sends families to Disney world or what ever the child has been dreaming of. Good Luck! Tina |
Here is a site that might help: http://www.yorkierescue.com/need.html. One of our great YT members referred some of us to this site! |
Hmmm well I don't have any Yorkies but I do have small dogs. I also have transport for a dog to Virginia if needed. If you think he might be Ok with a non Yorkie but a true little bundle of love please PM me. My rescue has a couple pups right now and also already have done the first vet check. |

LvLaila, have you heard anything about the child's surgery? Would love to hear an update! Will keep him and his family in our prayers. |
Only help that I can offer would be to contribute to a fund for a yorkie for this little boy, single mom, not lots of money, in fact I work two jobs in order to exist in SoCal, however, I would be willing to contribute some money to this family in order for their little boys dream to come true. As mommy to Bengie and Garett and all the love and joy they bring to me, I would love to help assist someone else in having that experience, especially a disabled child. Please let me know. |
If they still want a puppy, I think eensor is still selling Tater Jack for $300...we could maybe figure out a way to get him down to where you are |

I'm located in southern Ohio and would be more than willing to drive part way. We could do it. |
