Found a senior yorkie

My dh was at the auto parts store and when he got out of his truck he saw this little yorkie walking down the side of the highway. Cars were zooming by inches away from her and he thought she was going to be hit for sure before he could get to her. He tried calling her but when he did that she actually started to walk out into the traffic. It was a very nerve wracking few minutes, but he was able to get to her. He went inside the auto parts store and asked for an empty box to put her in because she smelled horrid and was covered in fleas. He took these two photos and sent them to me asking what he should do? I said bring her home and I would clean her up and give her a nice warm place to stay while we look for her owners. Here are the pics he sent me of her:

She was cold wet and scared when he brought her in. It has been raining pretty much all day here in Delaware. I gave her a bath and did my best to remove some of the major matts she had in her fur. This poor dog is definitely older she olny has 2 teeth and they look really bad. I don't think she has been cared for very well, but I am trying not to judge as I don't know how long she has been lost and on her own? She had a bad case of fleas and has thinning hair on her back. I am keeping her down stairs and trying to keep Tinkerbell away from her until I have taken her to a vet or the shelter. I don't know what to do. She seems like such a sweet girl and I do not want to leave her at the shelter. I think I am going to stop by the shelter in the morning just to have her scanned to see if she has a chip and talk to them about it. I hadn't planned on getting another Yorkie at this time, but sometimes things happen for a reason and my dh and I think this little girl had a guardian angel that maybe kept her safe until my dh found her. If she has owners then maybe they will have stopped by the shelter looking for her.

I would appreciate any advice as I have never gone through this process before. Thanks.

Bless her sweet little heart. I don't really have any advice for you, but just wanted to say how lucky you are to be married to a man that would stop and help this little one. Bless you both for saving this precious baby...and I agree with you, sometimes things do happen for a reason and we may never know why, but it seems as though this baby surely needed you!

Thanks Lolasmom. I don't really know what advice I am looking for. I just want to make sure I do what is best for this sweet girl. She has been sleeping for the past couple of hours in an extra crate that I had for Tink when she was a puppy. She is not very active, but I am sure her ordeal was very tiring and stressful.

Bless her sweet little heart. Poor little baby is probably so scared & confused being away from her mommie and her own bed, her own food & food bowl, toys, etc. Poor little darling. I pray you can find her home so she can get back to the lady who is likely going nuts trying to find her baby. I know if Tibbe were missing I would be crazy - just crazy. Please do have her scanned as you never know.

TxVicki 10-07-2012 03:29 PM

Oh my what an absolutely adorable little girl she is. Thank heavens for your husband for picking up this sweet baby. Thank you for allwoing her to come to your home.

You can take her by the Shelter and have her scanned for a chip or your Vet Office can scan her.

You can out up found posters in the area she was found and see if any one responds. You can also check Craigs List for your area and see if any one has listed in the Lost and Found area.

Thank heavens she has a warm place to stay and food to eat now.

Again I have to say she is just adorable.
You can also contact a Rescue Group and she if they will take her in.

I took a couple of photos of her relaxing on my sofa tonight. She is such a sweet dog. I feel so bad for her. She really needs some grooming attention, but I did not want to overwhelm her at first. I am definitely going to do my best to locate her owners, but I must admit that I don't think they were taking very good care of her :(

GeorgiesMomma 10-07-2012 04:52 PM

Bless you and your husband what a wonderful thing you all have done! She is a doll and looks so comfortable on the sofa. It warms my heart to know she has a happy and safe home to sleep in tonight.

rhondah 10-07-2012 04:59 PM

Your DH is a good man for doing that! Thanks to the both of you, she has a warm and safe place to rest tonight.

AWWW just look at that sweet baby girl. I am so glad that she is not out on the street tonight and is comfortable now.

I pray her owners can be found.

Tinksmygirl 10-08-2012 05:31 AM

The owners were found this morning. I had called a rescue this morning and they were sure that this dog had been reported missing. I sent him photos and it is a match. They are coming to pick her up around 12 noon today. They said she had been missing for a week.

I am happy that she will be reunited:)

Verbena 10-08-2012 06:06 AM

Oh wow!! That is wonderful. I am glad she is a loved pup and someone was looking for her too. You and your DH are amazing people for saving this pup and bringing her back to her parents. You made one family very happy. You are both angels :clapsmile

Yorkiemom1 10-08-2012 06:23 AM

Wonderful ending to a wonderful story!!! Thank you for saving this poor little lost soul and keeping her safe until she could be reunited with her family! I can not imagine how frightened and confused that baby was during this past week, wandering the streets. She slept safe and sound last night! Bless you and your husband for that!

I am so happy that the owners have been found. I just pray they keep a better eye on her so it doesn't happen again.

So glad her family is coming to get her, hopefully now they will keep a closer eye on her so she does not get lost again..
hugs,

I am happy the owners were found. I can only imagine how confused and lonely this old girl was. She was in bad shape when my dh found her. At least I was able to give her a good bath and give some relief from the fleas. I hope it is appropriate for me to suggest to her owners that she needs some vet care and some grooming. Her nails are really long and she still has some matted hair on her feet. I didn't feel I should try to do too much with her last night. The two remaining teeth in her mouth are rotten and look like they need to come out.

Do you all think it is okay for me to gently and politely suggest these things?

Thank Goodness your husband was caring enough to pick this little girl up and I'm sure saved her life! God bless you for taking the time to give her a bath and showing her some love. :)
I know if I were in your situation, I would have a very hard time handing this little girl back to the owners knowing she's been obviously neglected.:(
I'm sure this little girl feels much better today and probably shows it!
I would definitely say something to them about her teeth, and the pain they have to be causing her, along with the suffering she's enduring with the fleas!
If its a situation where they can not afford to take care of this poor baby, maybe you could suggest a rescue center or if possible let you keep her.
Again, God Bless you and your husband for caring. I'm praying the owners will do what's best for this precious little girl.

rhondah 10-08-2012 09:26 AM

Wonderful news!! I hope the owners are grateful you and your DH give her a safe place for the night!

Tinksmygirl 10-08-2012 09:46 AM

Well she is gone. The owners didn't come. The man I spoke to this morning from the rescue came and got her. He said the owners didn't have a car that was running and so he offered to pick her up. I did tell him that I thought the dog needed vet care and he said he was going to speak with them about it.

It sure doesn't take long to start getting attached. This experience has really opened my eyes to the possibility of maybe fostering in the future.

I can only pray that this is a Reputable Rescue Group and not just someone posing as a Rescue person.

I hope they take better care of her. If they don't have a car that run's they can't take her to Vet. Ok now I am just a worry wart about thinsg like this.

Thank you again for helping this sweet girl.

KimInMD 10-08-2012 10:51 AM

No, Vicki, you are not a worry wart. I thought the same thing. If they don't have a car that runs, can they even afford the vet care she needs to remove the rotten teeth.
OP- did the rescue provide you with a picture of her so that you could know it was a match, or did they just tell you it was a match? I'm thinking that this surely must have been a reputable rescue group. Seems like they really cared about getting her home. You did a good deed, and the world needs more angels like you. You just may have a future in fostering. :)

Tinksmygirl 10-08-2012 11:01 AM

Yes, it is a reputable rescue. It is actually a no kill shelter
Lost Pets | Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary

That shelter takes all dogs picked up by animal control in Kent County, De.

My thinking is the owners are having some financial difficulty. The man from the rescue assured me that he would make sure that she was going back to a safe home.

CouversMom 10-08-2012 11:42 AM

That poor girl... I hope they get her the vet care she needs. Thank you for taking her in.

KimInMD 10-08-2012 11:42 AM

That's great. I'm sure that made you feel better. You did such a good thing rescuing that sweet baby.

Yorkiemom1 10-08-2012 11:53 AM

This is a very sad situation.....and made much sadder that she is going back to what I think is not a situation conducive to owning any dog, much less a Yorkie. If I had been that rescue person, I would have never volunteered to take that baby back to that situation....is it just me, or does that sound like they were trying to come up with a way to save face by not picking the pup up, because they KNOW they can not take care of her, and they dont really want her, another mouth to feed.......now, he is returning that baby to this dire situation. So sad...........bet next time they dump her, it will be farther away.....

I know. I was, still am for that matter, having reservations. I almost wished that I hadn't called the shelter:(

I took pictures of her teeth and nails just in case.I am praying that the shelter will do what they told me and check back on this little girl to make sure she is seen by a vet. I spent a good 15 minutes talking to the guy when he picked her up and showed him everything I was concerned about.

I think I will call them in a few days and check on her. If the owners just wanted to get rid of her why did they post her as lost? If nobody had claimed her in 7 days legally I could have kept her.

Please don't second guess your role in helping this little girl. You and your husband went above and beyond what unfortunately most people these day would even do! :( God bless the two of you for rescuing her from the cold rain and just wandering the streets!
You did the right thing by contacting the shelter. Hopefully the Safe Haven will follow through and be an advocate for her and have the owners take care of her needs or surrender the dog to them to be adopted.
I see their site states that if an adoptable animal is not reclaimed, the animal may be transferred to another animal shelter or rescue for adoption, or adopted as a companion in a suitable home. :)

Thanks YazminD. I am trying not to, but it is hard. The shelter still has her listed on their web page with the photo my dh sent. They have her listed as a puppy 1 year or less??? I am definitely going to follow up and just make sure the shelter is checking on her. I would give her a home without a second thought if she ends up back at the shelter.

It breaks my heart to know that many dogs do not get the same love and care that I give to my Tinkerbell. I will never understand those types of people. :(

TxVicki 10-08-2012 04:51 PM

I just wonder why she is still listed on that Web Site, if they say they were taking her to the owner.

I just pray she will be ok. Please if you can follow up on her.

Tinksmygirl 10-10-2012 08:29 AM

I am going to be fostering this sweet girl

I called the rescue today to check on this girl. It turns out the people who thought this was their dog said it wasn\'t when he brought the dog to them. I am going to fill out paperwork to foster this girl and she will more then likely be spending the rest of her days with me.

I will have a home inspection tomorrow afternoon and she will bring her to me then as she said she doesn\'t think my home is going to be a problem. My heart feels so much lighter now. I was so worried about her. I thought this was meant to be when my dh brought her home to me on Sunday.

Now I need to think of a name. :D
