| Travel out of State with your Yorkie babes Hi Everyone! I was wondering what the process is to take your pet with you out of the state and/or country. I'm thinking of going to New York in July and to Spain in November... I haven't had my yorkie very long so i haven't had to take her along on other trips in the past...i know i wouldn't want to go without her... so i was hoping you guys could help me get prepared for this ahead of time. (in case it's not such an easy process). I also worry that the flight time to Spain from Los Angeles might be to hard on my pup. Has anyone ever been overseas with your babes? Do I need to get my dog a passport? does she need to get shots? how much extra will i have to pay for her flight? is the flight hard on the dog? is there anything i didn't mention that i will need to consider? You guys are great! -- thank you for all your advice on previous posts.

| youre dog needs to have PROOF of all shots, so bring your babies vet records animals are allowed into the cabin if they are confined to a small crate the whole time, if she is not used to this i would suggest getting her used to it quickly. Also, i think if you are travelling out of the country and then wish to come back in, youre baby has to go through a quarantine period anyone else have any more info on this??? |

| I don't know for sure about the quarantine period on coming back into the states, I'm sure you probably are right Orinskye(it makes a lot of sense). Also I believe some countries make pets go through a quarantine period when you get there as well. I know certain countries are rabies(and probably other things)free and do not want it brought in, I think Hawaii is actually like this too(rabies free). But if the country you are going to visit makes you quarantine it may not even be worth taking the dog depending on how long the quantine period is and how long you stay.

| Hi YT...hope u and ur furbabies are doing great! Honey, I would first check the pet regulations of the airline you are flying. No passport, LOL! Just a letter from your vet stating your furbaby has all the appropriate shots. They may or may not ask you for it when you check in at the airport. The airline will also be able to tell you how much it costs to bring your pet onboard. Last year I travelled from NY to FL so it was about 2 and 1/2 hours. and I had to get a bag to fit the size requirements. Its not as cute or stylish as all the other bags but it was perfect. Definitely get the travel bag before hand and get your furbaby used to it. They say your pet has to stay in their travel bag and under the front seat the whole time, but I couldn't bare it! I at least put the bag on my lap and that was fine. I made sure Cookie pee'd, pooped and ate before we left for the airport and just brought a weewee pad, water and some snacks for her. She didn't eat or drink anything during the flight but she did while we waited to get onboard. The people around didn't seem to mind but we made sure not to let her run around. We unzipped the bag but didn't let her off of our laps. We actually had a layover on the way back home so I went into the ladies room, took out the weewee pad in the bigger stall and she did her thing... My boyfriend thought I was nutty but what else is new. I could just tell she had to go...u know how u can just tell.....LOL! During the flight Cookie pretty much just slept. The only time she got a little restless was during take-off and landing but she got the hang of it and just kept yawning.. I guess she figured out that would help w/ the sensation in her ears. We will be going away again this year to Phoenix in April (5-6 hrs. flight) and I would love to bring her w/ me to Chile in Sept. but that whole quarantine thing scares me. Good luck! Hope my experience kinda helps you out... Here are a couple pictures of Cookie in her travel bag. At check-in the attendant couldn't believe I was carrying a dog in that bag...She actually asked me to take her out so she could see her. LOL!!! Last edited by RubyC; 03-23-2005 at 12:31 PM. |

| Ruby, Cookie is really cute! I love the pictures!!! thank you for all your information...it is VERY helpful... My girl is actually really shy and quite...she sits on my lap ALL THE TIME! So I'm hoping that will work to my advantage. A couple of years ago i flew to Switzerland from LA and remember seeing a lady on our flight who had her babe with her. I didn't have my pup yet so i didn't bother asking the lady any questions as to how she went about doing it. I actually felt kind of bad for the dog considering the flight was 11 hours! I just hate the thought of the quarantine period...i might really need to rethink the Spain trip all together. I don't think the trip would be much fun if i had to spend the time missing her. Plus i don't really have anyone who could watch her for me. You'll have to let me know how the 5 - 6 hour flight goes in April...that would be the length of our trip to NY. Also... would you have any advice on pet friendly things to do in the big apple? (i think you live there right?) I love NY!!!! oh! and...What airline did you fly with? is there one you would recommend... have you had a better experience with one over another? How big is cookie? she looks tiny!

| Check the country's laws about bringing dogs in and out. They are all different. To take one to Mexico, you have to have a certificate of health and vaccinations from your vet withing 30 days of travel. Same thing coming back. Mexco websites have this form that is printable. I'll bet other countries have one too. Go to the embassy websites or just type in "taking a dog to Spain" and see what comes up. |

| last times, I travel with my dog was about 2 years and I think you have have a certificate of health from your vet no more than ten days fromt he day you are traveling. I would check with the county's custome, to verify if there is a quarantine period or what else they will required you to bring alond with your baby, good luck & hope everythign works out for you. |

| Each airline may have different regulations / fees for travelers who want to travel with their pets. (But no, you don't need a passport for your pet.) You can either call your airlines directly or research on their websites... Just go to their main websites, and then type "pet" in the search area... Not sure which airlines you're using.. Here are some examples: American Airlines: http://www.aa.com/content/travelInfo...WithPets.jhtml Northwest Airlines: http://www.nwa.com/services/shipping...2.shtml#reqdoc Delta: http://www.delta.com/travel/special_...avel/index.jsp http://www.delta.com/care/faq/travel_faq/pets/index.jsp Hope this is helpful... |

| Another thing to remember is that most airlines only allow a certain number of dogs on each flight. You will want to call and make sure there is room on a specific flight before making your reservation. It is very risky to show up the day of your flight and hope that there is room. |

| I live overseas now and I just found out that you do need a pet passport to travel into any of the European countries. They have to have all shots up to date, a health certificate no more then 10 days before your travel date, and also there is NO quarantine period to bring pets over here or even back to the states. But if you want to check it out and what regulations there are you can look at www.travel.state.gov. It has all the info that you need to travel over to Europe.
