[News] 'Frou Frou' Dogs like Yorkies More Likely in Higher Income Households Before we got Yoda, I always hear about little old ladies with them... If anyone takes their Yorkie to the pet resort, please give us a review. :P --- And the higher-income households are home to more "frou frou" type dogs - the Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers and Bichon Frise, which are among the most popular breeds for those who earn $100,000 or more, but scarce in households that earn less than $25,000. Experts say it makes sense: the more fur, the more upkeep, the more money. "We see a lot of standard poodles," said Marcia Zuger, kennel manager at Applewood Pet Resort in Paradise Valley. "That's a really high-maintenance dog to have. There's a grooming commitment." The resort caters to the pampered pet, offering suites with color televisions, a bone-shaped swimming pool and frozen yogurt treats. Zuger said some poodle owners bring their dogs to the beauty parlor every week. http://www.azcentral.com/families/ar...9fam_dogs.html |
ha I earn less than 25,000 a year and I own a frou frou dog. my wonderfull wonderfull yorkie baby oliver. hahahaha I have out witted the systom |
I don't think it's about money at all, just that in most cases, only older people have enough time for Yorkies, or something... I think there's more upkeep in having a small indoor dog. :P |

Otis's poop is like a tootsie roll, and for his exercise, I just chase him around the room or give him a kleenex to shred. There is more fun in dressing small dogs up than a giant dog, and maybe that's why people label Yorkies as "frou-frou." |
Hmm, maybe only "snobby" old ladies have Yorkies then. Or snobby youngs women. hahah... j/k, j/k, I don't wanna sleep on the couch tonight! |

Military man in camo + 2 frou frou dogs = :hearts6: |
That is interesting. Also, interesting because the first post was in 2004! In addition - love the phrase "frou frou." |

Very interesting, I do know that it's expensive just taking care of the little ones, but so worth it for the joy that you get from them. |
That article gave me a chuckle.... I bought a lil cottage two years ago & I have a yorkie named ZoE. The people who built the house, had beautiful show poodles. In between the original owner/builders and me there was a couple with a rottweiler that they kept in a kennel in the back yard. The neighbours made a point to tell me about them and how they knew from the kind of dog they had, that they just weren't going to fit in. |
Walking a yorkie is a sure fire "chick" magnet for guys. Even an old dude like me has women stopping and fawning over Bailey when we walk the trail by the river. Of course, they don't look at me . . . . ;) |
As an owner to my little poodle, Ralph he is a lot of up keep. But I love him and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! |
Hah! i'm a stay at home mom, and my husband is in Paramedic School so he only works 2 days a week and we have a yorkie :) and a great dane, and trust me, the Dane is harder and more expensive to care for then Bentley! LOL |
I'm with Melissa, I certainly don't come in the high earner bracket and I'm about to get my second frou frou dog. Yorkies once you get them I think, are the furthest thing from frou frou, it's owners who do that by dressing them like dollies and putting them in prams. Teegy loves to wrestle and shake the heck out of his toys and loves to go on giant walks for hours. That's silliness, I think it's about the size of your heart more than your wallet. |
I am just a physical therapist, no frou frou in my condo. It was about size, icky weather in the Northeast, and previously growing up with a terrier. I wanted a dog, but small enough for me to control. When I was married I had a German Shepherd who loved me, but accidentally knocked me down a few times. She had to go with live my ex. I also know with a toy breed if the weather is awful, she can use dog potty pad/fake grass litter box inside her play pen. I plan to keep her hair fairly short, not like a show dog. |

I have to agree with everyone here! I have two "frou frou" dogs, and when I adopted both of them my family made less than 25, 000 a year .... and or income hasn't gone up that much since then. And I feel I "up-keep" my dogs VERY well on a budget. I remember when I had a larger dog. I was spending $60+ a month on food ALONE. Now that I have only two small dogs I spend about $10 on food a month (I purchase a large bag of food for $35 that lasts my dogs several months). Also, I LOVE when men are confident enough to walk around with/own little dogs ^-^ |
Yorkies aren't only chick magnets, they are people magnets. Everybody wants to pet them (all of them don't get to). People want to know how old they are, will they get bigger, etc. It's funny to watch my husband (big guy, former cop) play with them, talk to them, etc. He doesn't walk them but then he doesn't go for walks. He loves the cute harness's, sweaters, collars that I bring home. He especially loves grooming day....he waits by the door for me to get home with them. Five years ago, I don't think he would have thought about having a "frou frou dog". But we now have two. |
I did laugh when in the article it said . . . And balding men may prefer longhaired dogs |
