| Humane Society rescues 93 Yorkies Humane Society rescues 93 Yorkies 02/13/2009 - Humane Society rescues 93 Yorkies - STLtoday.com Photos available at the website above By Leah Thorsen ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 02/13/2009 Ninety-three Yorkshire terriers and two cockatiels were rescued Friday from an unlicensed breeding center near Springfield, the Humane Society of Missouri said. The animals arrived in three vans at the society's office at 1201 Macklind Avenue in St. Louis on Friday evening after being removed from the center near Pleasant Hope, Mo. That center had been in business for four years, said Jeane Jae, a Humane Society spokeswoman. Tim Rickey, director of the society's Animal Cruelty Task Force, described the conditions the dogs were living in as the "most horrible conditions I've ever seen." None of the animals had food or water and some lived in filth that was 4 inches thick. The dogs' fur was dirty, overgrown and matted, some so badly the animals couldn't even move, he said. Some of the dogs were limping, which could be the result of living in cages with mesh bottoms that don't properly support their small paws. "That is years of neglect," he said. The dogs varied in age and some will be ready for adoption in 30 days, Rickey said, although some will need further treatment. Veterinarians and other staff were at the Macklind office on Friday examining and treating the dogs. Rickey urged people considering buying a dog to insist upon seeing where dogs are kept before purchasing one and to report animal abuse. He was optimistic that most of the dogs can be successfully treated and adopted. "Our goal is to give them a second chance," Rickey said. "That's what it's all about."

| Hooray!!! another one down! I just wish the penalty for what these so called people have done could be swift and very harsh. They need to be locked up in their own filth and go without food and water. But I'm dreaming on that one. Thank God they got them out. |

| i SAW PICTURES OF SOME ON THE NEWS HERE LAST NIGHT!! The ones i saw had never had therei coats trimmed or brushed- were so matted- they barely looked like dogs! they were having to shave them down a lot, of course! 93 yorkies is a lot of yorkies- it didn't say anything about any other breeds! And some looked like they never should have been used for breeding dogs!! It is very sad- very, very sad!! I take Banjo to training classes at HSMO here is STL- next time we go- i am going to ask for some info on any of the dogs!

| It is incredibly sad - Missouri needs to WAKE UP & get some legislation in place to shut the overflow of puppy mills they have down! Of course we need it in my state of Iowa too & so many other states. You just wonder how many places are out there just like this -- we never know, until these places hit the airways. Also, this story doesn't say one thing about the people who were running the mill & if they will be charged & prevented from breeding again

| What a horrible story I think most breeders and puppy mills should be shot, there main concern is money not the animals themselves. I have a balanese that comes from a breeder that had a broken leg and she was going to have him put to sleep before I came along. I had gotten a female from this breeder who was fine but when my male had a broken leg she wanted to have him put to sleep, never took him to a vet and God knows how that leg was broken. Anyway, when I got my little Oz (Yorkie) I got him from a woman I knew that had bred her female and was NOT a typical breeder. He was the runt of the litter but is doing just fine and we love him to death as we do with our 2 balanese. I do NOT know what is wrong with people now a days not only with animals but with people and children especially. Our society has become very, very, very sick and greedy. |

| I just found this online -- looks like Feb 20 - which would be Friday there will be a hearing Up to 100 Yorkies rescued from puppy mill | News-Leader.com | Springfield News-Leader Up to 100 Yorkshire terriers have been rescued from an unlicensed puppy mill in northern Greene County today, according to the Humane Society of Missouri. Working with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Humane Society workers began taking dogs to its St. Louis shelter for rehabilitation and eventual adoption, according to the society. The society indicated it did not appear the dogs had access to food or water at the property south of Pleasant Hope. Many of the dogs had matted, overgrown hair and some were limping, possibly from living in cages that did not support the paws of the small dogs. A disposition hearing that could determine whether the dogs can be put up for adoption has been set for Feb. 20. I'm going to see if I can sign up for a Google Alert about these poor little ones, so we will know when they become available
