The blaze started in a machine shed at 10901 Horseshoe Lake Road just east of Palo shortly after 7:00 a.m. Four fire departments responded to the scene, where black smoke could be seen from miles away. Corey Cooper, with the Monroe Township Fire Dept. says that at least 30 dogs were killed, and an unknown number of other animals. Firefighters say they're working with the Department of Agriculture to determine just how many animals died, but had to wait until the hot spots could be extinguished. "Right now, the biggest problem we're dealing with is there's a lot of straw and hay in the structure. Once it gets in that, that's the biggest problem," said Corey Cooper, Monroe Township Fire Dept. Firefighters say no people were injured in the fire. Sherri Watson is a state licensed breeder who raised dogs at the property owned by her boyfriend Bill Wilson. Watson said she lost 16 Yorkies as well as some Standard Poodles and Brussels Griffons. Watson said there were also goats, rabbits, peacocks, chickens and some other farm animals inside the building that burned. Watson believed an electrical heater or wiring used to keep water flowing for the chickens may have sparked the fire. Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Chief Larry McBurney didn't have an exact cause but also believed some electrical problem was the culprit. |
wondering if this is a puppy mill?? - I hated using the word breeder - byb or puppy mill I would think, given the condition. Looks like somewhere she had other dogs. Regardless, this is very sad |
*Shaking head* This must makes me sick - literally. Can you imagine what they were going through? |
Very sad! Don't want to think what they went through! |
So sad so sad Yorkies or another breed....sad :(sad |
Licensed breeder? To have that many animals in a barn with no way out is horrible. Seems to me that if people really cared they would take the time to make sure everything was in top condition. Especially electrical. How sad once again that the dogs and other animals had to suffer so and die. I just can't find it in my heart to forgive people like this and what they do.:animal-pa |
I am so sad and sick about this story... |
yes, if one valued these animals, why would one use space heaters. A real furnace would have most likely kept them safe. But in the video they say the heater was heating water for the chickens - so how often was someone in this facility taking care of the animals (I know nothing about chickens - but this doesn't make sense to me.) |
so incredibly sad this is so very sad, i would be just devastated if that happened to my or any of our furbabies. I am so paranoid of leaving my girl at home, for two reasons, if there was a fire she couldn't get out. and with this economy there have been more house robberies and I worry someone would hurt her or let her go while they ransacked the house, (my friends house was just robbed) luckily they didn't have any pets but their house was trashed and their car was even stolen.:( |
so sad :( What a horrible shame. |
Very sad poor aniamals!! if there were chicken than they were laying eggs. Which means someone was in there everyday getting the eggs. We had a small farm when i was a child. it was my job to get the eggs every morning. Still space heaters are not the best way to heat water. the are alots of better ways. |

This is a tragic story...all the poor animals trapped...horrible way to die.:( I hope these people don't repeat this again, but if they do, I hope they've learned their lesson & take better care of these animals in better living conditions. Also hoping that other similar situated people see this & make changes accordingly, so it doesn't happen again. |
