| Yorkie Safety! My husband and I have already been accused of being "over-protective" of Toto but we found out you cannot be too protective!! We have "puppyproofed" our homes to the point that we are fanatics!! But .... we had a scare that almost caused our hearts to stop! We were busy and had ordered take-out which is just routine for us ... but Patrick opened one of those packets [which we usually toss] containing fork, spoon, napkin, salt, pepper, etc., because he needed another napkin. Fortunately, he saw the pepper packet when it hit the floor, but before he could reach down and retrieve it Toto came running by and quickly applied her "one second rule" [that rule is ... if it's on the floor for one second ... Toto owns it!! ]. She immediately scooped it up and ran like a rabbit ... we chased her for what seemed like 5 minutes before we finally got her and I swept her mouth inside and sure enough, it was stuck to the roof of her little mouth! Lucky for us it wasn't moist enough yet to open so she didn't get any out of it. I still shudder to think what the outcome could have been had Patrick not seen her grab it or if we hadn't been able to catch her in time!!! We learned yet another valuable lesson about Toto .... you just CAN'T be too over-protective!!

Wow, Toto sure is sneaky! Heheh, her one-second rule is funny. Good thing you caught her in time! Perhaps next time trying to offer her a real treat when she runs away would help? Last edited by fasteddie; 04-16-2004 at 08:42 AM.

What a cute story! But thank God you got it back in time. Toto sure "spiced" things up by stealing that pepper! heheheh

How about distracting her with her favorite squeak toy?

Well, I believe Toto needs to learn more about obedience, and to listen to what you say to her. Yoda has a hard time as well (such as when the doorbell rings), but we are trying to get him to listen to the base commands (sit, stay) at all times. Perhaps that's a start, if your Yorkie can understand to sit or stay at any time, I'm sure if she finds a bit of scrap food, she can learn to do as you say and stay away?

You could try putting Toto in a crate, or another punishment. What does Toto not like? Try that for punishment, maybe...
