Question for YT Breeders please..I am NEW here -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Got a quick question for YT Breeders please. I am new here and I am getting my baby back soon, he is nearly 4 months old and weight is 1lb 11oz. He had Kennel Cough (tracheabrocitis) over a month ago, the breeder who I purchased him from took him back and has doctored him for the past 4 weeks. He still has a cough but it is random, he eats good, and plays and has lots of energy I am told. Why does he have a dry cough every now and then and will it ever go away? Should I be very worried about this? The breeders Vet gave him a healthy dog report with clear lungs and no congestion. If i have posted this in the wrong place ...forgive me, but i wanted to ask the questions to breeders to get their point of view on this subject. Katharine Please feel free to PM me if you like |

Welcome to the forum, Katharine. Kennel Cough is not a serious disease. It seems that your yorkie is cured of kennel cough. He has a clear lungs and no congestion. He still has a cough sometimes, so we'd like to know why. My friend has a teacup poodle who is 3 years old weighs only 3 lbs. He coughs sometimes because he has a problem called "tracheal collapse" which is a very common problem in small dogs. The trachea, or windpipe, is a flexible tube made of a series of cartilage rings. In some dogs the cartilage isn't as rigid as it should be. When the rings collapse, the trachea flattens, obstructing the airway. It the collapse is in the neck region, the dog has problems breathing in. If the collapse is in the chest region, problems are more likely when the dog breathes out or coughs. Coughing is the major symptom. The cough, a harsh "goose honk" type of sound, occurs mostly during the day and is associated with excitement, pressure to the throat, or eating and drinking. Tracheal collapse is most common in very small breeds, especially teacups. I hope your puppy doesn't have this problem just like my friends dog. Best wishes for your teacup baby. |
Thankyou all for your replies :) I am taking my baby to my Vet as soon as I get him. I did ask the breeder about the tracheal collapse and she told me that is a different type of coughing as to what he is doing. He does not cough when excited or when running or eating. She said it is just a short little cough which sounds *dry* to her once in awhile. I thought maybe it was a left-over symptom from the Kennel Cough as he was real sick with that, my vet suggested I return him to the breeder for her to nurse him back to health. The Breeder has been very good to me about this, she does not want to see him sick either. I love this site, I learn so much from reading different things on here. Thankyou all. my dogs also had the dry cough. not kennel cough. it took a little while for them to get over it. just keep an eye on him. welcome to yt. |
Kennel cough takes about forever to go away - anyway it seems to! Depending on the dogs the cough can last longer. We have had it twice....we got it once from the vet and the slight lingering cough lasted about 5 months and then we had a dog come into our home with it..can't say for sure how long she had it before she got to us, but it only lasted about a month here. It is usually something they just have to get over. Antibiotics are given only to try to have it not go into the chest area - it really doesn't cure the kennel cough - only time does that. |
