| Well Puppy Check I was wondering what was usually covered during this exam. What should we have the vet cover? Basically, what is the norm that should be checked during the initial exam after receiving our new furbaby? Also, is this check up in-depth enough to find genetic or congenial defects? Thanks! Ivy |

| My vet did the following: Take their tempature Listened to heart & lungs Checked the joints for luxating patella Checked the treachea Checked how they walk He pinched them in various places to test reflex (he didn't pinch hard) Eyes Ears Teeth / Bite Fecal Gave any shots they were due I asked for a bile acid test & general blood work (cost extra) and to have the nails trimmed and to show me how to do it and the type of nail clippers I should get. I also called the breeders vet (with the breeder's permission - if they don't give permission it's a bad sign) and had them fax the entire records for my pup and the parents and gave a copy to my vet. During the exam is a good time to discuss future plans for spay/neutuer. ASK QUESTIONS. If your vet does something and you don't know why - ask! Ask how many Yorkies he has as patients and what breed he owns - this will give you an idea if he will be familiar with your puppy. I usually take a notebook with me with questions I want to ask. So many times I've left the appointment and forgot to ask something! Also I write down what the vet says since the comments made by the vet are not usually written down in the records. Plus I jot down the weight and temp. Yikes! I didn't mean to write so much!!! Hope this helps!

| Thank you for going into such detail. It's definitally made warning bells go off for one of the sites we were looking at. It strictly listed 3-4 procedures that should only be done. Any other procedures would make guarantees null and void. I'll have to email the breeder again. Hopefully it's just a miscommunication. Thanks again for all the information. It's a great help. |

| Oh, good question! I'd like to know about the test results as well. I thought we were making a well thought out decision, but seems we need to look closer at the possibility of our furbaby coming to us with problems. We would like our furbaby to be a pup, but the right young'n could be a good match. |

I know the luxating patella & treachea problems can still develop but I'm not sure about the shunt. It's a birth defect so I would think the bile acid would show... but I'm not really sure about it. Any one know? When I took Jen in for her check up I was told the vet can pop both her knees and we need to keep a close eye on her - The breeder didn't know about it and it's not indicated on medical chart from the breeder's vet.

I highly recommend that any yorkie be bile acid tested. It's too common in the breed and brings a lot of heartache.

| Make sure that you ask for a bile acid test specifically because regular bloodwork won't necessarily show a problem in the liver unless it's already progressed. And as far as a stool sample goes, the vet can take it, or if you have a "fresh" sample, bring it in. That's great that your vet already mentioned checking the liver! You found a baby already!! That's wonderful You must be so excited!

| Thanks yorkieluv. I wondered about the liver shunt test. Gin has never been tested...Hmmmm, her annual checkup is right around the corner, will have to ask Liz (our vet) to add that to the workup. I am kinda leary though, feel kinda like I am borrowing trouble. But I do realize it is better to catch it early....

| jvwheeler, don't hesitate to ask for that test. It's fairly inexpensive, and it's important that all yorkies be bile acid tested. I'm sure your baby will be fine!
