| advice on recovery from being spayed Sassy is getting spayed on Monday and we are scheduled to have new floors put in our house on wednesday. My question is how sick are they after the surgery and for how long do they need to remain quite and what do you recomend that i do with her while the workers are here should i cage her or will that make her more upset. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Looking forward to this information as well. Lulu gets spayed on Thursday morning. I do know that someone recommended getting a baby onsie to put on them and cutting out the tail so that they can't get to their sutures. I really hate those cone things and the dogs seem to hate them even more. Plus being as Lulu is so small I doubt that they will have one to fit her little neck. Good luck to your baby girl next week when she gets spayed. If I were you I would definitely crate her when they workers are there. The last thing you want is for her to get in their way and get hurt.

| I can tell you that my vet's office said the same thing following both girl's spaying - no running, jumping or stairs for a week to 10 days!!!! That is just about impossible when you're 4 lbs and the entire world is larger than you are. That being said, when Sissy was spayed, she rested the day we picked her up (my vet keeps them overnight) and by the next day she was back to herself. She never had any problems at all. Angel has been a different story. She was spayed last Thursday and is definitely not herself. We've already had one return vet visit (yesterday) as her incision is weeping. With any movement (even a body stretch) it starts to weep again. I did get a onesie and she still licked her incision, so when we saw the vet she got the "E"-collar. She looks pathetic, but the collar weighs a couple ounces (because of the snaps) and she hates moving around in it, so it is helping to keep her still. Her fur is pretty long and even though they shaved her belly as her incision weeps, her fur keeps getting stuck in the incision as the weeping dries and then when she moves and pulls her fur, it starts the cycle again. I'm keeping her fur pulled back in many multi-colored bands. She looks quite ridiculous!!!! I just hope her incision heals soon. She is supposed to get the stitches out next week. Good luck with your spaying. We hope is uneventful!!!!!

| the vet keeps them overnight to make sure they recover and do not have a reaction to the anest. they are put under with and to make sure they do not bust any stitches out the stitches are done on the inside and the outside the ones on the outside are removed later when the incision heals they are usually up and back to themselves the next day pets recover faster and handle pain and surgerys completely different than we do . most do not really notice the stitches and mess with them but they will probably be sore for awhile spay/neuter is a very routine procedure done by vets daily 8-)

| Gracie stayed overnight at the vet. She had no external stitches, the vet used glue to close her incision, so I did not have to use the onsies or anything like that. I picked up the doggy steps in hopes that would keep her quietly on the floor. NOT. She was not home more than one hour when she jumped up onto the sofa. So much for keeping her quiet. She was just fine. I think if I were having new flooring put in, I would put my Yorkie in a small bathroom with a baby gate so she could see out but would be confined and out of the way, and in your case, a bit on the quiet side so she can heal.

| Autumn spent the night at the vet when she was spayed. They told me know stairs or running. Keep her as quiet as possible for 10 days. That was impossible. She came home ran across the house got her toy and ran around like a crazy lady. After about 3-4 days of chasing her to keep her calm I finally gave up. She was fine. I really think it all depends on how the react to the surgery. Good luck and let us know how your furbaby does! |

| Thanks everyone for your advise. Why does it drive us so crazy when anything has to be done to our babies. I will let you no how she makes out. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I had Lex neutered in Jan and they said no activity for a week. Well the first day home he was groggy so he was quiet. He had a fit over the e-collar so I took it off to stop him from hurting himself to get rid of it. By the following morning he was running like a lunatic. I was wondering if it were the same dog that had just gone under the knife. Lulu is a rough and tough lady when it comes to play but she is a whiner for other things. So I am wondering how she will do. It sucks because I will be leaving her over night tomorrow so they can do the surgery very early in the morning. It will be weird to not have her home.

| My recommendation is to get an inflatable collar (Petco) its softer and doesn't obcure their view as much fom the side. The onesie didn't work for my Chase as he figured out how to get to his incision and cause it to weep, plus with the onesies you have to adjust it each time they take a potty break. Here is a photo of the collar. |

| Missy didn't spend the night at the Vets. It was done in the morning, and then we had to pick her up @ 7 pm (which the hospital closes) She was just very sleepy-- we all know why, and therefore she slept for the whole day.... for 2 days she wasn't very active (thankfully) but we had to keep a close eye on her because she tends to lick it, and she needs to avoid doing that so no infection can take place. She has recovered, stitches can come out any day, but we will be going next week to take them out... because shes been in enough stress (due to that tragic accident @ home on sunday) She was in a lot of discomfort though, for two days. Off and on we'd hear here weep... it was sad, i started crying at one point. But then she was back to her old ways.... lol Good luck. |

| I came here for spay/neuter advice too... ..and everyone was so helpful. But keep in mind every dog is different. Rylie (my 2 yr old boy) took longer to heal, he was lethargic and not very hungry for a few days. Layla (my 10 month old girl) was up and running the same day-- even though spaying is so invasive and alot more painful than neutering! Also he weighs close to 9 lbs and he required pain medication when we got home; Layla was only 4 lbs and didn't need any medication (except for the precautionary antibiotics which is standard after these types of procedures). So take your Yorkie's personality & disposition into account, but try not to worry. I was a mess when both Rylie & Layla had their surgeries but in the end, all you can do is find a vet you trust and shower your babies with as much love as you can when you finally get them home. P.S. I used a doggie- cone for my laid-back Rylie and he was fine with that; I used a doggie-cone, a Onesie and even purchased a playpen to keep an eye on my energetic crazy Layla but she got past everything-- yes, she pulled the cone off, slipped out of the Onesie and JUMPED out of the playpen...

| Zoe didn't stay overnight and we preferred it this way...at least we can take turns watching over her during the night and continue the pain meds on time intervals. These guys recooop SO fast. The first day, expect them to be zonked out and laying a lot although she tried to get up and play. Our vet said no walking much during the first week, ie, no long potty breaks. She pottied on pee pads during the day but did it standing up instead of squatting, really strange. Otherwise, it was uneventful and she bounced right back to running and playing on day 2. We didn't do an e-collar, we did the onsie which worked fine. We spoon fed her a lot with softened dog food or baby food and syringed water in her mouth. Good luck! Jodi, I hope Angel recoops...what a mess. I'm sure she will be back to herself in no time. |

| [QUOTE=sassypup;1186578Jodi, I hope Angel recoops...what a mess. I'm sure she will be back to herself in no time.[/QUOTE] Like, I said earlier - each pup is different. We had no problems with Sissy who was jumping around and as active as before on day 2. Angel went back to the vet today. Her incision continued to weep - now crusted and bloodied. Well, she has a fever and the vet took one look at the bloddy scabbied incision and said it needed to be cleaned up. Her feeling is that is why it continues to weep. Since the scabs were pulled off and it was cleaned up, it looks much better - but her belly is obviously sore. She got another 3 days of pain meds and continue on the antibiotics. She is definitely not feeling well and you can tell since she just wants to be held and cuddled. Always trust your mommy instinct. I almost wasn't going to take her in today, but I just knew she wasn't doing very well 7 days after the surgery..... Luckily, what Angel is experiencing is NOT typical. Hope your spays are uneventful!!!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Lots of good advice folks...thanks. I know lulu will be hurting something awful we ladies tend to get the shorter end of the sticks with things like this . When I had my tubal I was really hurting for a week or so myself. She is also going to have some baby teeth pulled.
