Need opinions on a food change & opinions on Natural Balance I thinking about trying Natural Balance in either the Sweet Potato & Fish formula or the Duck & Potato formula, which are both allergy formulas, because Hobbs still has dandruff. I tried the Cranberry Fields shampoo & conditioner and his dandruff was gone immediately after his bath, but it came back the next day. So, changing his food is my last resort. I know that these Natural Balance formulas only received 4 out of 6 stars on the Dog Food Reviews website, but I figured that feeding him a 4-star food would be better for him than a 5-star food that is causing him to have dandruff. What do yall think? Has anyone had experience with these Natural Balance formulas?? |
Weren't you feeding NV raw? Bobbi had really bad dandruff too. Canidae lamb and rice meal is great food. I also give the missing link..........no more dandruff :) |

I just really don't know what to do. Canidae is such an excellent food and I really don't want to change, but I think Hobbs has developed secondary allergies to one of the ingredients in Canidae since I had him on crap diets in the past. My instinct is just telling me I need to change to an allergy formula and Natural Balance has the highest quality allergy formulas. |
I'm also considering Timberwolf Organics Ocean Blue. It is an allergy formula and ranked 5 out of 6 stars on the Dog Food Reviews website. |
I have had Buddy on Natural Balance Organic for two years. He has thrived on it and has no problems regarding allergies. It does, however, have chicken in it. Maybe the organic would be a good try for you. I am going to switch to Canidae this weekend because I think he just needs a change. The only reason it has 4 stars out of 5 is because it is a little lower in protein. I just add fresh boiled chicken to it anyhow to give him that little extra protein. Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |
I'm not familiar with Timberwolf, but Natural Balance was one of the foods I tried when Sissy first went on her kibble strike months ago. Although it is only rated 4 of 6 stars, it is considered one of the super premium foods and other formulas of NB rank very high. I actually spoke with a NB rep at the pet store a while back and a single source protein/carb makes it much easier to determine if it is the food causing issues - that is why they formulate it as such. Also, the proteins/carbs they choose for their allergy formulas are known to be the least allergic. I would certainly try it if I was in your shoes. |
I feed my lab the Starkist Pink Salmon twice a week...I guess I could also put that in Hobbs' food for a little extra protein if I go with the Natural Balance since the only reason it got 4 stars was that it is lower in protein. |

There are a bunch of allergy formulas out there. Evangers has a Pheasant & Brown Rice, Solid Gold, Pinnacle and Wellness all look like they have single protein foods. I think California Natural does too. |

The lamb and rice meal is for dogs who are possibly allergic to the chicken ;) It is NOT the same thing. The lamb and rice is just one meat source. I used to use the original version..........the lamb and rice work better for us. Alot of yorkies are allergic to chicken or turkey. |

Also, Raw Instinct is grain free. (It's kibble, like EVO, it's not raw. I hate to say it since i just switched my dogs to EVO, but it looks better than EVO!) |
