Dog Foods I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is the best dog food for Yorkies, especially small ones? I have a 12wk old female on Science Diet and it looks like she is starting to have dandriff and I am getting a small male who is currently on Nutro Ultra. Any help would be appreciated. |
Actually I use Science Diet small bits and Nutro wet food (in the pouches) but I'm no expert... |
Hi Krystal, there are quite a few different posts here that talk about the best kinds of dog food... i tried my hardest to look for the link, but i really couldn't find it... But this link should help you out a lot. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69354 My yorkie is 12 weeks old and was initially on purina puppy chow, i heard it was really bad for puppies, then i went out and the guy at the pet store said that purina pro plan for small breed puppies was good... but after reading all the posts, i see that it really isn't. Pro Plan also made my dog really hyper... I didn't think it was the food, but i bought a yorkshire terrier book and it says that if the diet consists of a lot of carbs then the puppy will be extra active... and when i looked at the ingredients, boy was it ever filled with lots of carbs... not to mention the additives and preservatives that the pup really doesn't need!!! I've just changed Missy to eat Chicken Soup for the Pet lovers soul - for puppies, and she's still active, but not totally hyper like she had ADHD!! lol Let me just tell you how hard it was for me to find a dealer that sold this food!! DAYUM!!! haha it took 2 days for me to find someone close by... Chicken soup has the first top 3 ingredient as protein, and uses Vit E as it's preservative... also has lots of fruits and veggies... but we did, and i'm completely happy.... Good luck!! PS, you can also do a search on the forum for a specific food if you need more info! |
Hey. i don't know how to say this is a nice way.. but science diet is NOT good food.. you want food that is 100% natural.. like Canidae or Life's Abundance of Wellness. I had layla on what i tohught was great food (Blue Buffalo) but i found out it isn't.. so tomorrow i'm going out ot buy one of those brands! you do NOT Want to buy food you can get in a petstore like petsmart. make sure you go to a specialty store or buy online. |
Ok Krystal... I looked a little harder... using google and I found the link!! http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ read and compare, you'll soon find the best food!!! :D |
There is another thread on here somewhere, that links to a site that gives you a system for rating the food you are using. I love that site, but can't find the link. I'm getting ready to look for a senior food...would love to find that again. If anyone knows where it is, please post. I'm sure it would help out OP.:) |

Every one has opinions but ultimately you need to make your own........ I myself was feeding an awful food until I took the time and 'educated' myself. I made a decision quick and I am happy ;) good luck in your search  |
