| You get what you pay for. I buy Wellness for my dogs and I only spend 50.00every three months for two dogs... they are my family. They are worth it If you go to the right places it isn't that much more. I think the smaller bag is 15.00.

My furkids Donating Member | I was feeding Nutro Ultra Puppy/Adult until I went on a site that rated dog foods..Nutro Ultra did NOT get very high ratings..I have switched them over to Canidae all stages and they love it.

| So here I am thinking, yeah I'm a good mommy, I feed Ferdie a natural, holistic food that isn't bad for him. I THOUGHT I thoroughly looked over the ingredients before ever purchasing it. Guess I overlooked the very first product in the list: Lamb meal. Ugh - I'll be switching his food soon. We tried Life's Abundance - no bueno. Even though i slowly mixed it in with his old food, it made him very sick and the vet urged me to discontinue the food because it didn't agree with him. Even one piece in a meal made him sick. I'll take your suggestions and look into the food you guys use.

| [quote=jp4m2;956505]Diet For Adult Dogs Amounts given are adequate for one day?s feeding of a 20-35 pound dog (depending on age & activity level). Adjust amounts proportionally for your dog?s weight. Starches may be decreased or omitted in case of digestive problems or for weight loss. CHOOSE ONE PROTEIN SOURCE: Animal Proteins: (meat amounts given in raw weight) * 1/3 pound boneless chicken breast or thigh, chopped, ground, or minced * 3 large hard-boiled eggs * 1/3 pound lean beef * Optional: once a week, substitute 4 oz organic liver for 1/2 of any meat source Vegetarian Proteins: * 1 cup cottage cheese * 1/2 cup tofu, firm * 1 cup soybeans, cooked * 1 cup lentils, cooked CHOOSE ONE STARCH SOURCE: With Animal Proteins: * 2 cups cooked macaroni * 3 cups cooked potato, with skin, chopped or mashed * 2 cups cooked rice * 2 cups rolled oats, quick, cooked quote] I'm sorry but I have to bring up one item here... the macaroni. I don't believe it's good for any dog. It killed a female Bull Mastiff I had back in '77 (oh, I am old). It swells in the stomach. Her stomach literally "blew up" the size of a large beach ball, we rushed her to the vet and when he cut her open she was full of it. Some neighbor thought they were being nice and fed it to her... So unless they've done something to the macaroni so that it doesn't swell - I wouldn't feed it to them.

What is your concern? That it is meal? That doesn?t always mean a bad thing. Basically, meal means it's been dehydrated. You could compare two bags of food. One with lamb listed first, the other lamb meal. You would think the one with lamb would be better but not necessarily. Since it still has the moisture it weighs more so they list it first. Take out that moisture and it would drop way down on the ingredients list. The one with lamb meal could contain a lot more lamb. There are excellent foods that have lamb meal or chicken meal as their first ingredient. Solid Gold, Flint River Ranch and Canidae just to name a few companies.

| Start by doing a search for foods that are human grade, all natural, that do not contain artificial coloring and preservatives. Read what the company has to say about their own product and then find out what sources that do not benefit from their sales in any way have to say about them.

| Thanks for the great article! I switched Bailey over to Nature's Variety Raw Instinct. I have her on the grain free dry kibble for now. I feed her cooked chicken at night. Nature's Variety is about $11.00 for a 5lb bag. There are several other products in this line that we will try eventually. I did a lot of reading about raw foods and it seems the healthiest choice for my dogs and they like it. Bailey was having problems with the corn in Royal Canin and is lactose intolerant. The vet wanted to do allergy testing and that is $300.00 Nature's Variety Raw Instinct is sold at pet stores, (not petco/petsmart.) My new puppy Angel is also on this (her breeder feeds it to her dogs) it is for all stages. They both seem to like it and eat it. Here is a link (you have to register) for a BOGO Offer, they'll have you pick location of nearest store for you and you print coupon. naturesvariety.com/iloveit
