Need Opinions Please: Anal Glands, Constipation, and Puppies My cousin (whom I live with) just got a Yorkie pup!!! So that I means I have another one too! :D Anyway..LOLOL Yesterday I saw her scooting her butt. I know that has to do with anal glands, and also figured it had to do with her not pooping. We've had her since Tuesday, and she hasn't pooped yet! Either that, or she is, and she's eating it. Regardless...Matt took her to the vet yesterday and he told the vet. The vet expressed her glands. The vet said that at 11 weeks old her glands shouldn't need to be expressed! He was very concerned that this would be a problem for his new baby (named Beatrice). What do you think? Is it abnormal and or bad for a little pup to need to have her glands expressed already? What do we do about the pooping? :( I gave her a little oil yesterday, but that didn't work. Is pumpkin okay for a pup? All opinons and suggestions will be happily accepted. Thank you!!!! :p |
I have heard to give pumpkin. did the vet say she was constipated. Maybe the draggin the butt helps the anal glands. I wouldn't worry too much about the butt dragging unless it becomes excessive. Once she is pooping normal it should all take care of itself. |
AWWWWWWW! Poor little bitty baby!!!!!! :p :p :p You definately need to give her something to make her poop...pumpkin is good. But the thing is, if her poop is too soft, it won't express her anal glands. I would start off with some pumpkin and just get her to poop...any poop at all. Once she gets the hang of pooping, start giving her food that will make her poop hard, like kibbles. You DO NOT want to get in the habit of having to express her anal glands manually. Hopefully once she gets used to her new home she will start pooping and everything will be fine. My friend has to have her dog's anal glands manually expressed once a month. It is quite obvious that the dog has problems with its rear end...everytime it poops its little hole is so red and swollen. I feel so sorry for it. :( |
Sorry I didn't get back in a few days, but I wanted to let you all know that she is pooping now!! Yippee!!! :D But...when she poops, she's getting poop all over her butt and then scooting on the floor to wipe it off. My cousin is "convinced" that it's her anal glands again. I'm just telling him that she wants to get the poop off. Please, tell me what you think! :D Thanks. |
Sounds like she might need her lil' butt trimmed. I give all my babies a baby carrot every morning. They love it and it helps to keep them firm so that they empty the anal glands naturally. |

I agree, she may need to have her coolie trimmed lol, Gucci was having a problem and was resolved once her butt was trimmed...Good luck! |
We got Toto at 16 weeks ... whopping 1 1/2 lbs.! She was so tiny & her little legs so short, when she pooped she was sitting on it! She would always run to me wanting that messy stuff off! Needless to say, she got lots of butt washing every day and a couple of all over baths. It never harmed her coat and she always felt lots better! Good luck and welcome, little Beatrice! ;) |

Thanks, guys! :D Matt is going to the vet today because he did say, "If she starts to scoot again, come back in." I tried to tell him that I doubt if the glands are full in a day and that she's scooting cuz she has poop on her butt! But, he's gonna go anyway. Worried daddy! :D Oh, and I did trim her butt a little, but I don't think my electric shaver is sharp enough, cuz barely anything came off. :( |
