Hi all,

Hope you can help. For the past few days Jess has been shaking her head a lot and scratching her right ear. My wife and I have examined both ears very closely. They both seem nice and clean, no smells, can't see any mites etc. We can see what looks like a very small round red bite mark inside her right ear. Earlier today after she had been shaking her head, we found a dead spider where she had been sitting. Maybe it had got in her ear and bit her? We do a lot of walking in the farm fields where she loves nosing in the bushes so it could be possible she picked one up.

My question is, can we put anything on the mark to ease the itching? Can we put a little antisepic cream on a cotton bud and dab it on? Or what about a cotton bud dipped in salt water? The vets in the UK are not 24/7 where we are and we can tell it is annoying Jess.

All advice gratefully received.

I would ask your vet before putting anything in the ear. I would worry about it getting in the ear canal

I would call the vet too, maybe some triple antibiotic will work but make sure first. Good luck

For an insect bite, you can use different things; dab on a little vinegar, an antibiotic ointment like Ozonol, an anti-itching ointment, or camomile lotion. Salt water is fine as well. You can also use a cold tea-bag; it is great for drawing heat and for soothing sore spots. There is very little possibility of you harming the dog by treating a bite.

Alternately, there could be a seed or bit of dirt irritating her ear; try swabbing it with a damp cotton ball. If you have ear/eye drops around-human type is fine-after wiping the ear, put in a drop or two, then rub on the outside below the outer ear-you should be able to hear it 'settling'.

After you have tried everything, if the dog is still shaking her ear, then contact a veterinarian. This is not an emergency, so don't worry about the weekend, but ring them on Monday. With a scope, the ear can be viewed quite easily, and if there is something inside, they will treat it then.
