Wet/Canned Food...Is it bad?? I have been giving my yorkies wet/canned food just in the mornings mixed with their dry kibble for the past month or so. My yorkie, Hobbs, is super skinny so I thought it would be a good way to get him to eat his food so he could put some weight on. They both eat it real well and I feel like it kinda "jump starts" their day. Then the rest of the day and night I just leave out dry food, which they nibble on throughout the day. They eat it really well during the day, but in the mornings they won't touch their food unless it has the wet food mixed in. I have always heard that wet/canned food is not good for them and that it is especially bad for their teeth. I want to continue giving them the wet food in the mornings mixed with their dry food, but I don't want to sacrifice their health. So, what do ya'll think?? Is wet/canned food bad for them?? Should I continue to give it to them?? |
It's only bad for their teeth if it is the only food they get. They need the crunchy food to help clean their teeth. I give mine a tablespoon of canned food both morning and evening. And they let me know when it's time. |
You could try to mix warm water in with the dry kibble. |

I do believe it's only bad for them if that's ALL they have, just because the hard food helps remove tartar on their teeth. I feed Merricks wet with Chicken Soup dry. I know Cali likes the variety. What has helped me is putting Cali on a feeding schedule..that way she WANTS to eat the dry because shes hungry. I used to feed wet in the evenings, but shed hold out for it all day, so now I do it in the mornings... |
once you start them on the soft stuff they expect it every day! I see no problem with it as long as they are getting the dry food as well. I was camping one weekend and this man had his yorkie with him and the yorkie was 11 years old and had no teeth, the man said it was caused from him only eating soft food, the poor dogs tounge was just laying out of him mouth and was dry looking, I felt so bad for the poor baby. |
I too give wet food in the morning and leave dry out the rest of the day. Baby is 3 and her teeth are fine. I started this because she was finicky, but now we have a routine. |
