She's here, but may have a problem I will post pics of her on the nursery thread, but I have a question about her skin. I totally would not reccommend the breeder I got her from. I should have not gone with her because of some red flags but I did. Anyway I have little Shylah. She is 11 weeks and not quite 2 lbs yet. Tiny little thing. She seems to be eating and drinking well. She has great bladder control too. She can hold it a long time. Haven't seen her poop yet. Any way she has dry flakey skin and feels like little scabs on her back. Her ear had a little sore on it to. I think the breeder shaved her ears and accidently cut her. But I am concerned about her skin. I gave her another bath when I got her to see if that was the problem and it is still there. Any ideas? I don't see fleas or any bugs. Also is it normal for her to be sleeping a lot? She will play for about 15 to 20 minutes then falls asleep or just lays there and stares. I put her outside this evening with the other dogs and she just ran and hopped at them all over the yard, so she does have some energy. I am wondering since this is her first day, she just hasn't come out of her shell. She just seems awfully quiet and mellow. We'll see how the night goes. I forget already how Starsky was when he was a puppy. She seems so different. |
Aww, I can't wait to see your pictures! I think the sleeping is normal..I got Cali at 10.5 weeks and she would play for like 20-30 mins and be OUT..and then up to play again..She still does it (17 weeks) but she's awake a little more. Im sure shes trying to get used to her new home, too. |
Can't wait to see pictures!! The sleeping thing is normal. Every puppy I got would sleep just like you described. As for the skin, try giving her missing link and give her a bath in a special shampoo. Ask your vet for a shampoo to bath her in for her dry flaky skin. With alot of dry skin, oatmeal shampoo alone is not enough to help. I got a shampoo from my vet, it is called Hylit (sp?) and it is for dogs with dry skin. I have heard other people get it, so I know that it is not just my vet that carries it, your vet might or they might be able to tell you where to get it. It works so great, I seen improvements the first day, and it smells like oatmeal, it has no soap, so you don't have to worry about hurting the pup's eyes and makes is so that you can give your dog a bath several times and not dry out the skin. It has fatty acids in it that really helps the skin. Anyways, it works wonders on dry flaky skin, even makes their hair smell nice and feel really soft.  |
Poor little Shylah! I am thinking she may be allergic to whatever your breeder was feeding. Poor little thing. What food is she on? Sorry that you have to go through this right away. Hopefully it is just a topical issue and not internal. |
Yeah!!! A new puppy- that's great! As far as sleeping and seeming to not "come out of her shell" yet, I would just give her a couple days. All of this is a big change for her. Sleeping a lot is normal, she's just a baby. As long as she is eating and drinking fine when she is awake I wouldn't worry about her. Just give her a little time to adjust. With her skin - could she have had fleas and maybe the breeder used flea shampoo or a flea dip on her? That could explain the dry skin and scabs... Try not to worry to much just yet and enjoy her!! Can't wait to see some pictures! |
My boys would do the same thing when they were puppies. Play for 15-20mins, then be out cold for a couple hours. Actually they are 10 months old now and when I take them for a nice 45 min walk, or bring them to my moms to run around for a couple hours, when they get home they pretty much fall right asleep for the night. I don't think it takes much for a yorkie to get worn out! |
