Dandruff and baths Bentley is 10 weeks old. He has dandruff pretty bad. I was told not to give them too many baths when they are young because they can be stressful for them and also dry out his skin even more. Is this true? How often do you give your yorkie a bath? I was also told that I could just use Head and Shoulders or Selson Blue. Is this ok for them? I recently bought Perfect Coat, Natural Oatmeal shampoo. The pet store recommended this. Any other suggestions? What do you use to clean them in the bath? I have given him one bath so far and just used my hands to rub in the shampoo-this ok??? Thanks! Liz aka Bentley's Mommy! |
A good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will help a lot - Oscar went through a brief phase of actually having little scabs because his skin was so dry (he was scratching at it) and I hadn't been using a conditioner. I got Pet Silk moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and he's been fantastic ever since. My vet also suggested adding a tiny bit of olive oil to his meals everyday - apparently helps with the dry skin - I kept forgetting to add it in, so I can't attest to that, but it's something you could try. Some people swear by it. When they are that young, I don't think you need to bathe them too often - they don't have the long coat yet that tends to get dirty quickly. Oscar is almost 8mths and I still only bathe him every other weekend. I DO think it is a good idea to get them used to the bathing process early though - especially the hairdryer! Oh, I've also heard that their diet can contribute to dry skin - if you're feeding kibble with corn as an ingredient, apparently that can contribute to itchiness/dry skin. I am feeding Oscar Royal Canin puppy right now (which lists corn as an ingredient) and will be switching to Chicken Soup brand for his adult food. Hope this helps... |
I bathe Holly every week with a Silky dog shampoo and some conditioner. I put some oil in her food when she was little. Her puppy coat was greasy so we had the opposite problem to you. Bathing and combing helps to spread the oils through the coat,so don't stop doing it. They do need to be accustomed to it when young. Holly's coat is dryer now so I use a spray conditioner when I comb every day. There are also dietery supplements you can get to help like My Beau..not sure what is available in US. If all else fails, ask your vet. |
Gucci had dry and flaky skin when she was younger. I used Oatmeal shampoo and conditioner and add missing link to her food. I also switch her kibble, I was feeding her Nutro, now she eats Canidae. Also I think you should ask your vet. |
