| I had to do it! I had to do it! I had to give Latte some prednisone for her itching. The bendryl does nothing and for some reason, every time we go to Arizona, she scratches like crazy when we get back! I only give her a quarter tablet of .5mg a day. I can't help it! She's miserable and I'm going crazy listening to "Thumper" scratch. Someone please tell me it's ok! |

| it'll be okay. try to find an alternative though, because it's not good for her to be on it for a long period of time. try hypo allergenic shampoos and things like that. good luck!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | pred is good for short time periods but its not something you want to use long term. Also remember when you want to take her off the pred you need to wean her off. you can't just stop cold turkey. start going to every other day for a week and then every three days for a week (or ask your vet for another schedule). If its outside allergens that make her itch you can always get a heska allergy test done to find out what exactly she is allergic too and then a sub Q medication can be given to her which will make her feel better. Or you can try hydroxyzine, which is another prescription medication but its not a steriod like pred, and you can get it from your vet. |

| I had to do it I had weaned her off this winter and we just started using it again this last week. It makes a big difference, but I will never get her the shots again. They seem to want to give her a shot every time I took her in, but I don't want her to have that big dose. I tried givingn her the children's benedryl, but I didn't see any difference at all. I will wean her off again as soon as I can. In this hot weather, whatever is bothering her should die pretty quickly. |

| i hope this makes you feel better! I'm actually a pharmacy student, two more years until I graduate! =) Prednisone can actually be prescribed to canines, but it is best to try to use it every other day, and weaning off is a must! Also, prednisone may weaken your dog's immune system, so minimize those trips to the dog park!! Ativan is a non-steroidal substitute, but the good news is that kidney damages, etc is only shown in very long term situations! Your baby should be fine, but I'd always start off with a liquid benedryl before using an oral steroid! |

| Ok, I am giving her only about 1/6 of a prednisone tablet daily, and I'd like to also giver her benedryl, because she's still licking and scratching. I bought the children's chewable, and it's 12.5 mg. If 25 mg fis for 25 lb, that'd be .5 for 5 lbs. So if it's 12.5 mg, I need to giver her 2/5 of a tablet for 5 lbs. (I'm a teacher, but I don't like word problems. ) |

| food and itching I did discover that she's allergic to poultry and I got her a food with no corn-Authority dry and a beef canned. Also, I try to give her no treats with corn. I have tried so hard to keep her off the prednisone, but I am stumped. I don't know what else to do and I have to say that my vet seems to think that prednisone is no big deal. Like I said, they'll give her a full shot of it with no hesitation. I don't want to give her allergy testing, but I'm pretty convinced that it's environmental as well as food. Rinsing her paws seems to help, and I bought Cetaphil soap instead of shampoo. I'm so glad to have aplace to talk about this. My husband gets tired of the continuing saga. |
