| Puppy Yorkie and other dog Hi everyone!! I just joined the forum coz my sister and I just got a new little Yorkie on Friday so I have a few questions. Any help you could give would be great. I have another dog in the house, she is a 12 year old French Poodle. How much contact should they be allowed to have? He is only 2 months ago and I believe my mom said he needs one more shot next week. The breeder told us to keep him sheltered until he hits 3 months but I have been reading that its ok for them to interact as long as the other dog has her shots which she does. So what's the answer? Also, my sister just mentioned that he hasn't eaten at all today but he has been active. Is that cause for concern? And he is really picky when it comes to drinking water. His urine was a bit dark but its lightening up and by reading other posters messages, I see we're moving in the right direction I guess my overall question is how sheltered should he be and for how long? I obviously dont want him to get sick but he seems to want to play more, explore more and I feel bad that he cries when I keep him away from the poodle. Any advice you could give a first time yorkie owner would be awesome. Thanks guys! |

| He can play with your poodle in your home. You want to keep him sheltered from places like petco, parks and public places like that where you don't know whose been there and what disease they might have had... (until he's had all his shots at least) I think you mentioned that your baby is 2 months old?? How much does he weigh.. He really should be eating.. Sometimes when my Daisy wouldn't eat I could play with the food in my hands for a few seconds and she would eat. Must be something about being in my hands and making it interactive.. LOL Do you have nutrical for him?? |

| He's been eating up a storm...it was just today. Well actually yesterday, he didn't wanna eat at first but I moved the food around in my hand and he started eating then. My sister said she tried to entice him like that and nothing, but he hasn't been crying to show he is hungry so I am so confused I honestly don't know what kind of food it is coz my mom bought him in Columbia and the breeder provided the food. Is there a specific brand I should get once this one runs out? |

| It's ideal to stay with what the breeder had him on if that is a good brand of food. If you don't have anyway to find out you should switch foods when you still have a bit left so that you can mix them half and half (for like 7 days) and don't switch him cold turkey. It will sometimes upset their little tummies and cause a big mess for you.. I use Pro Plan. My babies love it and that's what Ty came from the breeders eating. I know that there are a lot of different brands that people use and I'm sure that they will be throwing some others out there for you too.. |

| He's actually 9 weeks now. He just finished playing up a storm with my sister so he was tired. All my mom had to do was play him there and he did not move a muscle. You know, I just realized I keep calling him "he". I haven't told you his name....COOKIE! My sister named him that coz she says he looks like a chocolate chip cookie |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and he is a cutie. Just remember he needs to eat at least 2-3 times a day and give him Nurtical if he isn't eating. It's better to give them some as a precaution then to end up at the vets.

| I have never sheltered a new puppy in my house. With two healthy dogs - I see no health issues. The one thing I have more often than not had to do was protect the older dog (even a young older dog) from being played with to death. My pup totally wears my 4-year-old Bichon out constantly. He is relentless. No one (no person or dog) can play as much as he wants to play. So - I have to put my Bichon in the bedroom occasionally and close the door so he can have a moment's peace and take a nap. Right now, my Bichon is lying on my desk resting while I am on the computer. He just finished a two-hour session with my 8-month old Yorkie and he's tired. Let your dogs spend as much time as possible together. They need to develop their own relationship. But - anytime you think one is really getting a raw deal - step in and even things up a bit. Pups (younger dogs) can really be tiring at times ---even for othe pets!! Carol Jean Carol Jean |

| If he won't eat try wetting his kibble with warm water to bring out the smell-it worked when my pup wouldn't eat when tiny. With these pups who eat so little,it is important they are on good quality kibble, for small breed puppies.Check out the kibble you were given and you might want to slowly change to a good brand available in your area.Nutro is a popular one on this site and my pup likes it a lot.

| We also have an older dog, a 12 year old eskimo spitz named Sheena. She was none to pleased when Sissy came home. Sheena has never been a "normal" dog, has never played with any dog toys, does not fetch, refuses to walk on a leash and hates the car. She is also not fond of other animals. I did not try to keep them separated when Sissy came, cause I wanted them to get to know each other as much as possible. Sissy thinks Sheena will play with her, so she jumps up at her and bites at her feet. Sheena keeps to herself most of the time, but occasionally Sissy will seek her out and Sheena starts growling and barking at Sissy. She has nipped close to her a few times also. Since Sheena is older, I just tell her to go downstairs - since Sissy will not go down the stairs and that keeps them apart. Sissy has been with us since the beginning of November, so I don't expect thigns to change. Not a major problem since I'm home most of the time and when I am Sissy is usually on my lap or lounging in a sun spot on the floor. She wants to be where I am. Sheena stays in our bedroom, either in her dog bed or on our bed. Sissy's room is the downstairs bathroom where she is when no one is home and at night. I feel more comfortable knowing that she can't get hurt this way.

| Well so far so good. Cookie is looking for my dog, Mechas, more and tyring to interact with her. Mechas is being a little standoffish right now but I think its coz he's so tiny, she knows better. We'll see how things progress as he gets older. |
