| Yorkie throws up around once a month - 3 weeks Hi there, I hope you're all well. My Yorkie is 8.5 months and since he was about 4.5 months he's thrown up yellow bile around once a month or once in 3 weeks. It's now maybe the 4th or 5th time it has happened. The first few times I knew what was going on, because he was being picky and not eating food offered first thing in the morning (he's free fed too) and had slept all night. The last two times, it has happened early in the morning (9-11am) after eating at around 10pm (he wanted a long lie). It never happens twice in a row (i.e. it will be one throw up then weeks will go by) and his stools, energy, everything else is normal. He expels bile once and acts like nothing has happened. I will go to the vet, but in the meantime, does anyone have experience with this type of thing? Thanks! Last edited by Tahiti; 09-19-2021 at 12:07 AM. |

| Hi, it happened to Mike quite often before with no other symptoms - he would throw up bile early morning because of an empty stomach. Giving him a snack right before going to bed fixed the issue at the time. I'd bring it up with the vet anyway |

| Mine will randomly throw up bile when their tummies are empty.

| Yes, Jax had that problem, too. According to my vet, it’s pretty common among dogs — especially small dogs — who refuse breakfast and let their stomachs stay empty too long. It’s called Bilious Vomiting Syndrome. The “cure” is that you need to coax your little one to eat breakfast as soon as he wakes up in the morning. Not an easy task, I know, when your pup is uninterested in eating breakfast. However, Jax never does the Bilious vomiting unless he skips breakfast. |

| Here’s a short article about it: https://www.petmd.com/blogs/nutritio...very-day-31825 Jax does fine as long as he eats a couple of mini milkbones at bedtime and then breakfast before 7am. |

| Yes, it does happen when tummies are empty. Other things to consider: bile acid test to rule out a liver shunt....sometimes if a shunt is small it can go undetected for a long time. Sometimes the liver enzymes can be normal and they can still have a shunt! If it continues, ask about GI test that is sent out to Texas A&M ... https://vetmed.tamu.edu/g

| Thanks all, it's a matter of making sure he'll eat first thing in the morning (as you've said, no easy task!). Being extra careful about that now and making sure he gets some snacks right before bed. I took him to the vet just-in-case and they said he is totally fine and that once a month is quite normal for this breed. They said come in if it's more than once a week.
