Diagnosed with Acute Pancreatitis This past Saturday our 6 year old Lola began vomiting and became lethargic. We rushed her to Animal emergency and she was there until Tuesday. She was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. She is eating very little and still lethargic. After the stay at hospital several days they released her. She was sent home with meds for pain, to entice eating and another for nausea. I need information on a low fat diet as she’s not liking the special diet foods prescribed. Also anyone with this issue on their pet can you tell me how long they’ll be lethargic and sad. Lola was a normal loving and playful dog prior to this happening. |
Pancreatitis can be deadly. If she still is not feeling well, I urge you to see a board certified internal med specialist asap! As for the food, there are a few prescription foods that are low fat. I would not buy anything that was not RX at this point. Your general vet should be able to help you with another low fat food. If the entyce is not working, you could ask your vet about mirtazapine...it is also an appetite stimulant. Maybe the pain meds are making her this subdued??? What did they give her? Does she have any vomiting or diarrhea? |
The foods we were given to try your prescription. They are low fat. The problem with the pain meds (gabapentin), I was told to give her as needed for pain. Lol allows me to pick her up and touch your stomach without any obvious signs of pain. The emergency vet told me if she’s not acting for displaying symptoms of pain that we could stop that medication. I just don’t know if she is actually hurting and I need to pee and would hate to deprive her of that relief. Last night she slightly vomited phlegm and I said no signs of any diarrhea. Her urine is very dark as if not hydrated enough. Although she does St., water. |
Do you have a regular vet you can call? If she doesn't like the food they gave her, get another. There are other RX foods. I have used Hill's ID Low Fat and also Royal Canin Gastro Low Fat for pups with pancreatitis. Yeah, I would discontinue the Gabapentin and see how she manages. If she is painful she will let you know...either by panting a lot or hunching her back . Sounds like she is ok...but I would encourage you to have her urine checked out if it remains dark in color after you get her eating again. |
ladyjane.... 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thank you very much. I am taking Lola in to see her regular vet today. I will definitely have her checked as needed. |

So Lola still has inflammation in the pancreas area. She does not have any fever. The doctor said to continue with the pain meds (Gabapentin) but to reduce it to half of what was originally prescribed when we left the hospital. She was given a shot (Cerenia) for anti-vomiting / nausea. Also given a shot of fluids (Subcutaneous) to help with hydration. To believe at this point is that she’s doing ok but definitely need to be monitored because of the severity of her pancreatitis. Yep she’s not eating more than bits and pieces by Monday they suggest taking her to have a more in depth ultrasound to verify her internals are okay. |
Poor baby girl. I hate pancreatitis...it is a very scary condition. Cerenia is a great medication. Hopefully that will help calm her tummy and she might eat more. Glad she got some fluids, too. Thanks for the update! Sending good thoughts.... |
My heart is happy. Our Lola woke up this morning in a great mood. Happy and playful. She actually ate a full meal, her first since last Thursday. She appears to be much better. |
