| fatty ground beef Hi All - With this whole coronavirus pandemic, my supemarket ran out of the 85 to 90% ground beef I make for my doggie. The only thing that had was 73% and one package of 90%. I ended up buying 3 packages of 73% and the one 91%, then mixed it all together and freezed it in sections. Since, eating it my baby has had somewhat runny stools. Sometimes his poop starts out solid but gets runny at the end. I began reading about what it could be and now I'm afraid that the beef was too fatty for him. It's been about 5 days. I won't gie it to him anymore, but I hope I didn't cause something bad. He is acting normally. I need some reassurance! |

| Just the change of diet can be enough to temporarily change bowel habits. Just be sure he's getting enough water and doesn't get dehydrated from the loose stools. Might keep Pedialyte on hand, try some unseasoned boned, boiled white-meat chicken with white rice for few meals. Of add some pumpkin to couple of meals. Vet if loose stools continue or dog behavior changes.

| T Thanks for the response. I gave him some pumpkin today and then just rice, because chicken makes him itch. The odd thing is that I typically feed him homemade food of 85% ground beef, carrots, peas, rice daily, which is what would bind him up. So thats why I went to just rice and pumpkin. His stoll today seemed more solid. I'll check again tonight. I'm worried now that since I make his meals homemade that he is not getting the balance he needs. I do provide freeze dried raw from Orijen. Any thoughts anyone? I thought I was doing a good thing. |

| thanks does it sound like I've done him a disservice by feeding him my homemade recipe? I do supplement with Orijen freeze dried raw. i have a Just Food for Dogs right down the street and i tried their food, but he didn't like. I think I use a higher grade beef. I then bought the supplement powder, but it gave him loose stools. Maybe I should try again? I am guessing the recipe has to be exact, right? |

| supplements Should I purchase a supplement and if so, can anyone recommend a good one. Also, do the supplements only work with a very specific recipe, because that's how Just Food For Dogs supplement works. |

Yes, this. Chewie would prefer the boiled diet as well, and I had to watch, helpless, when she went on food strike in protest of me having to insist she eats her dog food. It was a very long week. Vet and I are fine with her being on canned food because it was better than her not getting balanced meals. But, the long term impact is pretty significant if they don't eat enough nutrients. | |

| You would have to look at the specific supplement but balanceit.com has A LOT of recipes so you should be able to find a recipe there to use with their supplement.

| Thanks Thanks for the tip about BalanceIt. Love their site. I ended up going with Just Food For Dogs supplement but now am reconsidering the pros and cons. I like how Balanceit allows you to use your own recipe and then suggests how much of the suppllement to use to balace the recipe where as Just Food For Dog has a different supplement for each of their very specific recipes. So that had me choosing BalanceIt but then I heard that their supplement is very synthetic and it's three times as expensive as Just Food For Dogs which is also right down the street. All that being said, I went with Just Food For Dogs Beef and Russet Potato recipe and supplement which also called for fish oil, which I purchased. I made a 5 pound recipe which is half of their full recipe and should last two weeks. So far he loves it and has adjusted to it. The prob is that i like to switch up his meals so he doesn't have to eat the same every day of the year so I may have to buy the other supplement for one of their other recipes! This recipe calls for Ground beef, beef liver, potato, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, peas, and apple with safflower oil, fish oil, and their supplement. What do you all think? |

A lot of other stuff you were feeding tends to be high in fat (the Orijen freeze dried raw is very high in fat) and with Yorkies being prone to pancreatitis, and me suffering though a dog with it, it's not something I am comfortable with. Sounds like you are on the right path! They have very good customer service so I am sure would be able to answer any specific questions regarding their food and recipes.

| Thanks Thanks I do like it so far but oddly enough, the protein, carb, fat ratio looks like it's high in fat. I was thinking to lower the safflower oil but they told me not to. |
