| Dilated Cardiomyopothy in Yorkie Hello All! I have not been around much in the past couple years... but have occasionally checked in. We are now reeling from a diagnosis we received on Monday for Khloe, our 9 (almost 10) year old Yorkie... She has: 1. Dilated cardiomyopathy 2. A thymoma tumor in her chest 3. The beginnings of collapsed trachea She has been struggling with coughing on and off for the past ~6 months and at our previous vet, we did a couple rounds of antibiotics to see if it would go away... It didn't. In the past couple weeks, we have had the following tests completed: 1. Xray of the chest - found enlarged heart and mass 2. Bloodwork 3. Echocardiogram of the chest - again, found the same thing, so we were referred to WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (we were told it's the best in the nation) 4. CT scan of the chest 5. Another echo (this time by a board certified cardiologist) 6. Needle aspirate of the mass 6. Bloodwork... again We have been told to switch her food immediately. She has always eaten Acana grain free, and the vet is associating the food with her DCM. I had the hardest time figuring out what to switch to, but I grabbed a bag of Farmina N&D Ancestral Grain to start. Our next steps are to meet with an oncologist at WSU to figure out if the tumor can be removed. We are completely overwhelmed with her diagnoses and are crushed. We are hoping that the tumor can be removed and her DCM and collapsed trachea can be managed with medication. Does anyone have any experience with any of these issues? Any suggestions on good foods that will have the taurine levels she needs? I just feel so upset and want to do what is best for both Khloe and Couver.

| Oh goodness I’m so sorry. I hope everything works out. I’m a huge fan of Royal Canin and Wellness. Both are great foods with lots of science backing them. I will keep y’all in my prayers.

| Thanks Taylor! We are working on getting her on a taurine supplement and I have read some threads on here about an injection that helps with collapsed trachea. We really need to get her heart stabilized before we can put her under for surgery.

| My moms rescue that had bad CT was on hydrocodone and it’s seemed to make a huge difference. Continuing to keep y’all in my prayers!

| Oh dang, I am so sorry. Acana unfortunately has been one of the top contributors and I am sorry Khloe has been affected. We used to be big fans of Acana and stopped feeding it a year and a half or so ago. Jackson got DX with a heart murmur at age 7, I believe, and I still wonder if food had anything to do with it. I know there are a few groups on FB that seem helpful, maybe you could join. Farmina is a great brand with veterinarians on staff and formulating the food. Like Taylor said, RC and Wellness. The Honest Kitchen has some good grain-inclusive dehydrated foods if you wanted to go that route.

| Khloe has progressively getting worse... She is coughing more and more. She is on Vetmedin, Enalapril, taurine supplements, and we finished 8 weeks of Adequan injections for her CT. She will be visiting the cardiologist and oncologist at Washington State University on December 9th and we are hoping that her heart has improved enough to go under anesthesia... but I'm not convinced that she's improved. We are doing our best to keep her comfortable and are really hoping she can have the mass removed in December. It depends on the location of the mass, but there is a laparoscopic option, but she could end up needing to have her chest cut open to remove it. We are willing to do whatever it takes and are hoping for the best at her next appointment!

| I am so sorry to hear that poor Khloe Mae is not gaining ground. Thank you for giving us an update...I know how difficult it can be to take the time when you are distracted by the worry of trying to comfort our little ones when they are not well. I will continue to keep you both in my thoughts, and hope for the best possible outcome at her upcoming trip to the university!
