Default will a pupy starve themselves?

My puppy is not really eating his food anymore. He was a really good eater and then we really never gave him any table food except a dollop of whip cream and a spoonful of ice cream and now whenever he sees food he goes nuts and wont eat his food. If you show it to him its like he is not interested. He really likes his treats but I dont want to like keep giving him that and then having him think he doesnt have to eat his food. So I was just wondering if eventully he will begin eatting again? Like if he is hungary will he eat?

thanks~!

Id just keep offering puppy food and if you see no eating, offer healthy adult food maybe mixed in w/ the puppy food.

I don't know really if a puppy will "starve" themselves to death but the lack of nutrition will definatley take it's toll.

When I had Half-Pint (RIP) she was a non-eater. I had to feed her soft food through a syringe (force feed)...It just was not a good thing whatsoever.

well his food is the puppy Eukanuba and he was a really good eater with that until a couple days ago. I found some food left over from my other yorkie called moist and meaty. I mixed it in with his food and he is eating that is it ok? I know its not as healthy as the Eukanuba but atleast he is eating it and the Eukanuba is still in there.

I'm also of the opinion that if he's eating, be happy! You can worry about the food type after you are sure he's going to continue eating. I've been told time and time again that dogs won't starve themselves, but I honestly can't help worrying about Tia when she doesn't want to eat. I'm overprotective like that (my vet hates it too - so many phone calls about food/eating!)

I'm glad to hear that you were able to get some food in him.

dogs are lactose intolerant no matter how tempting it is to give him/her whip cream or ice cream it is so bad for them, they can't digest it.

Try yogart or cottage cheese but nothing with cows milk.

My baby is a finicky eater as well. He had diarrhea about a week ago and the vet told me to feed him chicken and rice..well, he WENT nuts...non-stop eating, he LOVED IT!!! Once the diarrhea settled and I tried to switch back to his regular Eukanuba, he wanted no part of it-he would not eat at all. I called my regular vet, but he was not in so I spoke with another vet and she said that most dogs will not starve themselves, however TOY dogs tend to do so, they will go on hunger strikes. She told me to keep feeding him the chicken with rice if that's what he wanted, it's just important that he continues to eat. So I went on this forum and posted the same question you just did, and I got a great suggestion from someone..they said to mix the eukanuba with some chicken in a little of the chicken broth (so its not so try) and grind it in my food processor...it has worked wonders!! Also, don't forget to give him his nuytrical, that will help as well. Good luck..they can be picky little eaters!!

My vet said that dogs don't starve themselves, and if i were to give Archie treats, to make sure I put it in his bowl only so that he understands that that is only where he can eat from.

My vet told me that a puppy will never starve himself but he surely will have tricks to make you feel extremely guilty about it and peoples will give them what he wants .

Lickthestar-

Does your vet make an exception for treats used to train? I was just curious about that advice because how would train then? He must just mean non-training treats.

My lil Rambo is such a picky eater. I do feed him wellness but he wont eat it until i sprinkle some freeze dried beef treats on his meal. If not he'll refuse to eat. Sometimes i do think that he'll starve too if i didnt do that but the vet told me he wouldn't .

I'm not sure...i never asked the vet that because I don't really train Archie with treats. I'm pretty sure the vet meant non-training treats. My problem when I asked her was that Archie was refusing to eat food because he always wanted to eat what I was eating.

I didn't think that small treats were really an issue anyway because he gets such a small amount of them, that he would need to eat real food...Things would be different if I fed him a load of treats and he wanted that instead of food.
