| Dry Food and Skin Allergies Our baby started on TOTW (Taste of the Wild) High Prairie and stayed on it for his first 3 - 4 years and he used to have MilkBone treats often. He then developed skin allergies and the Vet said for sure to take him off the MilkBones (which we did immediately) AND to switch to Nature's Recipe Vegetarian food. He has been on that for 2 years and while his skin condition at times looks a little better, it has not cleared up. He is almost 7 now. At times, he has been given medication(s), too. We have introduced TOTW Pacific Stream (salmon, primarily) at the recommendation of TOTW. We have been mixing it 50/50 with his vegetarian food - he loves it - but, his skin has not cleared up and his poop stinks (maybe the salmon?). We are considering TOTW Sierra Mountain (lamb, primarily) - also recommended by TOTW. We are confused and don't want to spend $1,000 + for allergy tests. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It's very unlikely the allergies have anything to do with food; only about 10-15% of dog allergies are related to food. I'd recommend you just at least choose a grain free food as dogs with allergies tend to me much more vulnerable to issues w/ grains. These symptoms are likely due to environmental allergies (pollens, dust, mites etc), and allergies are very common among yorkies, as any Vet Dermatologist will tell you. I'd get your baby on either Apoquel, Cytopoint, or Atopica asap. Some dogs do have only seasonal allergies - but my 3 babies who have had allergies are all year round. | I highly doubt it is a food allergy because that is rare. I would either get a second opinion from a vet or talk to your vet about other options. It kind of concerns me the vets first move was food let alone a vegetarian food. You need to look at environmental allergies and medicines for that like apoquel or cytopoint. You may want to also look into testing the thyroid for thyroid issues which can also cause skin issues. Although I would get your pup off the vegetarian food I would not continue to switch the food because the food is not the issue and you are going to end up with tummy issues. I personally don’t think grains are a big deal and I like food company’s that have vets on staff, do feeding trials and have great quality control like wellness, Royal Canin and hills.

| Allergy testing I did the allergy testing on my Yorkie and it was a nightmare, we did everything we could for 5 years to find the cause of her scratching her face and her little lips would get bald and sometime bleed. I took her to a specialist and they did the shots for things she is normally never even around. During the treatment they gave her Atopica a steroid to help with the itching and I believe with my whole heart this is what caused her intestinal cancer. this little girl never threw up in 7 years nor had loose stool, not a single gastric issue till the Atopica. the shots were painful she hated it. Please please don't do it. Try hydrolyzed protein foods first. |
