Chicken kibble? We are now finishing one month on a Farmina prescription kibble which has not much in it, other than hydrolyzed fish protein and rice starch. In just few weeks the food helped us immensely with belly skin patches. Since there was no other changes in environment they must have been triggered by food. I also want to go back to puppy food because our Mike is growing and needs full range of nutrients. He was on lamb before so now we must switch to another protein source. We are feeding Farmina starting from day 1 and our new vet is suggesting to not switch food brands for now, because she believes it may cause gastrointestinal upset since he is so little (21 weeks old). Unfortunately Farmina only has lamb and chicken options for puppies, so we decided to try chicken for now. I'm upset of course because I read so many posts about allergy to chicken kibble. Please encourage me.. is it possible he can be allergic to lamb and not chicken? |

Yes, that's the one. Thank you very much to checking it out in detail. My 2 main concerns are: the prescription food has much lower calcium content and no chondroitin and glucosamine and those are important now as he is teething and still growing in size... Also it has only 18% protein and 1,2% fiber which seems low. On the other hand I compared adult fish kibble with puppy chicken one and there is less difference between those. I contacted Farmina before starting the vet prescription food and they said they absolutely don't recommend it for such young age except if a part of elimination diet for... I guess now I'm contemplating whether adult fish kibble can be a better option for us? Any thoughts? |
A food allergy as a puppy is rare. If it is a true food allergy though any food you buy that is not prescription food is going to have trace amounts of the other foods that are made in the same factory as it and for a dog with an allergy it’s enough to set them off. Have you talked to your vet about your concerns? I couldn’t get either of my boys to eat puppy food they ended up eating what the adult dogs were eating and we had no issues. You could also look at puppy vitamins that have some of the things your worried about it them. |
Lovetodream88, you are absolutely right. I'm educating myself slowly on the topic now and understand that it's food intolerance and/or food sensitivity in most cases we call food allergy. You know, I'm almost sure that this was triggered my the multi-vaccine he received at 11 and 14 weeks old. I keep looking at the photos and comparing it with shots dates. We had an argument with the old vet about this (after she gave him multi vaccine with Lepto which I was VERY VERY MUCH against and then she pretended it was a misunderstanding) and that's one of the reason we switched clinics. I shared my concerns with vet and she thinks it's better to try chicken first and see. I was just trying to find a shortcut maybe.. to minimize the risk of the skin spot coming back. Now I'm thinking, if chicken will not work, I will insist on trying adult fish kibble and maybe supplementing the vitamin difference. Gives me courage that your boys did well on adult food. |
Allergies of any kind (food, environmental etc) would be extremely rare in puppies. And even in adults, food allergies are seen in only about 10-15% of allergy issues. |
