I picked him up and his eye is still weeping. They said he was ok though. I tried to give him a warm compress and he was not having it. I gave him a pain pill and he's sleeping in his usual spot right now. I'm not upset with the surgery clinic or anything... they did their job, which was to perform the surgery. What came after was ultimately my responsibility. It was a rough couple days, but I think we're on the right track now.

Today was better. He does ok when the pain meds are fresh, but after it's been 6 hours or so he turns into a tiny terror. I've been trying to leave him alone. He's not really keen on me touching him right now. He has a good bit of hair stuck in the weeping part of the right eye wound, but the vet told me to leave it alone. It's making me a little crazy. I really want to clean it. I've read so many enucleation stories over the last couple days, and most of them say their dog was a happy camper after 3 days. It's unfortunate that his experience is panning out differently, but I'm doing everything I can for him.

Hey. This morning was rough... he got upset when I took him outside and he freaked out when I gave him his clindamycin (oral administration). He did take his tramadol without issue but that's because it was in his food. I made an appointment with the surgeon's clinic to take him back tomorrow for a recheck. He is going to stay with them all day. I am beginning to wonder if I'm the problem. I think maybe he is afraid of me. I don't know. I just want him to be ok.

| I am very grateful to finally have some positive news to share with you guys. Last night when I got home from work, he was behaving very normally. Part of me wondered if I was hallucinating his return to pre-surgery behavior. He had been the most miserable dog in the world since Saturday. I did end up going to the gym, and when I came back he was back to being miserable. I started to think I was actually going crazy. This morning I woke him up for potty and meds and he was back to normal again. He is not a morning dog. He didn't want to get up, and after I fed him he went and curled up on one of his stolen throw blankets. And then, a miracle happened... he let me brush him. I really think he is ok. I still took him to the vet for his checkup, since the right eye continues to weep and now the right nostril has joined the party. But I feel pretty confident now that he is making progress in his recovery and will be ok. This experience has renewed my respect for parents and caregivers. It's so hard to make health decisions for another living being, especially when they can't speak for themselves. In the last couple days I've gone through so many emotions... guilt, worry, fear, confusion, frustration, and ultimately joy. I had a couple meltdowns. I drove my friends crazy. I questioned my sanity at many points. I'll let you know how the recheck goes today. I think he will appreciate having the mess attached to his right eye wound cleaned up. Or at least I hope so. | Great news. Praying this progress continues and you are spared the horrible roller coaster ride. He may well feel better to have the eye goo removed at the vet. Please don’t get spooked if he has the occasional setback until the eyes are completely healed and he is fully adapted to his new situation. But he will be ok. Again, I feel for you and praise you for your wonderful loving care of your boy throughout all this trauma. |

The vet just called. It turns out I am not crazy and the weeping from the right eye was indicative of tissue damage. It's a minor complication of surgery, but not serious. It wasn't caused by anything I did or didn't do. They cleaned it up and did some tests and he is ok, he's just going to need a couple extra days before the stitches come out. The left eye is healing great. I am glad he's been on antibiotics for the last few days!

Remember when I said I wasn't upset with the surgeon? Well now I'm upset with the surgeon. After picking my dog up and bringing him home, the eye started weeping within 30 minutes. I called the clinic back and they told me to do cold compresses and check back with them in a couple days. I thought I was supposed to be doing warm compresses. But ok then. I also got a speech about how this is a major surgery and it may take him a while to recover. I was told at least 3 times by this surgeon that my dog would be back to normal in 24 hours and the surgery was no big deal. I chose him because he seemed so confident and comfortable with this procedure. I mean, they didn't even prescribe antibiotics or pain medication. And now that he has complications, they're acting like that never happened. So now I'm frustrated. I have decided I am going to listen to my dog and let him tell me what he needs. If he wants to rest and be left alone, I will leave him alone. If he is crying and seems uncomfortable, he's going to the vet and I don't care what they say about it. I don't care if they ban me from the darn clinic. If any of you have a suggestion for toys that are loud and obnoxious, please shoot me some links. Nothing is off limits. I have decided to make it my mission to cheer my dog up.

I have decided to make it my mission to cheer my dog up.[/QUOTE] All three of my dogs like loud squeakers. We find that goDog toys are generally quite sturdy for our three. They are plushy, but have nylon backing, so they last awhile (even with our Gus the destroyer). They can often be found quite reasonably priced at TJMaxx and Marshalls, and are also on Amazon...many sizes. The added benefit is that their squeakers are easy to manipulate in small mouths, and loud! Many of the larger sizes have multiple squeakers. When all three play with my husband at the same time, it is a noisy experience. I hope that your little guy is soon ready to engage and play!

Surgeon Hi. So sorry your poor little one is still recovering. I know surgeons both human and vets can seem unkind and thoughtless. But if they think he is doing ok, perhaps you have to go with that. I know my dog’s eye surgeon never warned me the recovery would be so long and tedious after cataract surgery, so although I was upset and felt for my dog, I had no choice but to trust the vet, and in the end he was fine. I was a nervous wreck after it all though and the dog was also anxious! But I agree you have also to go with your own instinct with your baby, you know him better than anyone. If you are concerned you are right to go back to the vet. Really though, surgery does not always recover according to expectations, and I am sorry your dog is having issues for so long. As for toys, I can’t help there, my dog does not play with toys! Healing thoughts and prayers are with you. Hang in there, this bad period too will pass. But I know you are getting towards the end of your rope. Last edited by dottiesyrky; 07-19-2018 at 05:28 AM.
