I usually give my 2 Yorkies a sedative from our vet in Canada. We are flying home before I caN get vet sedative. I was told Benadryl. What do you guys think. And dosage? I read it can't be liquid because that has alcohol base: :

HI There,

I give 1 childrens benedryl about 20 minutes before take off for my 7 pound Emma. It relaxes her and our vet approved this.

No, I actually would not use Benadryl for sedative properties for flying. It can actually have a non-sedating effect in many dogs (AND humans, most especially the elderly, btw!). The only way I'd recommend this is if you first confirm the sedation effect actually works in your dog at least 2-3 times before you fly. Otherwise, you may reallllly regret this, trust me!

Yep. Benadryl does not sedated Callie and never has it actually makes her a bit hyper.

Has anyone tried a small dose of Melatonin? Is that safe?

Melatonin is safe for dogs but I don't think it works the same in dogs as people. Callie takes it twice a day for Cushings and it doesn't make her tired.

Oh interesting I didn't know it could treat other illnesses. When scottie was a puppy, around 8 months, I got only 2 hrs of sleep a night because he would bark nonstop. After a couple months of sleepless nights, I finally decided to give him a very small dosage of melatonin for two nights. And from then onwards he stopped bugging me at night. It was almost like a miracle.

It is also supposed to help hair growth in dogs who have loss hair from allergies and Cushings.

Yup! It's used for animals for hair regrowth in Cushings - taken twice a day. It's metabolized much faster in animals

It's also used for anxiety at 4th of July time, and can be tried for car rides.
