Debarked? Max has been ours for ten days. However, he has yet to bark. Spenser, our other Yorkie, barks a lot. Max makes a strange sound, sort of a cry, I thought. It just struck me that maybe his former owner debarked him. We took him to our vet the day after we got him and she did a complete physical and checked his newly cleaned teeth ( thank you rescue doc). She found his Lymes disease and luxating patella, but we didn't yet realize he never barked, just cried, so I didn't ask. Could they have debarked our little man? Gew |
Debarked dogs still try to bark, it's just a hoarse type of bark that isn't as loud. Some pups are just shy about being vocal until they get comfortable. Other pups don't bark at all! Pups have individual personalities which makes some vocal, and others not so much. I'm sure if you really wanted to know either way, you can ask your vet to check. I remember when I first got Kaji, he would cry, whimper, and make this strange barking type sound that just sounded off. I thought for sure he was debarked. Not the case at all. Once he was comfortable, he barked at the doorbell once. He sometimes barks at knocks on the door, and doorbells, but mostly he is quiet. The bad side of that is that Kaji is more comfortable at screaming than he is at barking. It can be quiet annoying. It makes me think he's more monkey than dog. |
Maybe he just doesn't bark. My older girl doesn't really bark. |
I agree that he may just not be a barker, and he is settling into his new home. Teddy wasn't a barker for the longest time, years. Now he is vocal. :D Could also be the result of the dental/anesthesia intubation. My Max who is normally very vocal was quiet and a bit raspy for a week after a surgery. I was worried that his trachea was damaged, but it was just a bit sore. |
