| Coughing and Gagging Hi everyone, I thought I was through with worry for a while after Alfie went through his surgery last week to remove a polyp and stone from his bladder. He is now starting to cough and gag as if he is trying to get a hairball up. He is doing it quite a bit the last 2-3 days (well at least 3 episodes that I know of). He would have done this once in a blue moon. My husband thought it's because he is licking his feet and legs quite a bit and he is swallowing some hair. He is doing this because we can't bath him yet as he still has his stitches in and I think there is sticky stuff left behind from whatever they use during surgery. I have also in those 2-3 days gone back to work from being on holiday for 2 weeks so I don't know if all this is related or has intubation from the surgery done something to him. Of course I have been reading up about reverse sneezing, kennel cough and the dreaded collasping trachea. I am so worried about this now. I have to take him back in a week to get his stitches removed so will bring it up with the vet. In the meantime I will try and give him a foot and leg bath so he is not licking whatever is on him. My rescue, Penny has a severe heart murmur and she does this coughing and gagging a good bit and done it once in the vet and all they said was oh it was due to the heart and that she may need to go on heard tablets. Nothing else. After the reading I have been doing today, I am worried it is a collasping trachea and they are just not taking it seriously.

| Poor Alfie and poor you! You both deserve a break from worrying. The coughing and gagging could be a throat irritation. If it started immediately after surgery, probably from intubation. Could also be the licking and hair, as you suggested. If it is really bad, then he could have an inflamed throat. Max had an episode once that made me think he was choking. The coughing and gagging were really bad. We rushed him to the ER and it turned out his throat was inflamed. Antibiotics fixed him.

| He had the surgery Wednesday last week but had to go back again on Saturday as he wee tickle (sorry only way I can politely describe it ) had been so of not going back in if you know what I mean? It was starting to get infected so I had to get another wee stitch into it to keep it in. The vets gave him Tramodol Melt 50mg Zamodol and I have to give him a quarter of the tablet twice daily. It only occurred to him that is has only been happening since he got home from the vet on Saturday and I tried to think what has happened differently since, other than the homecooked diet his is on, he has been taking the Tramodol so I am wondering if it is a reaction to it. I have searched on the internet and respiratory depression is a side effect and also I did see coughing on another site I read. So I ran the vet this morning but they are in open surgery now and have to wait to 11am to speak to them. Just hoping this is the case and that when he is off them he will go back to normal with no permanent effects.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Throat irritation can def last a couple/few weeks for some, so it could easily just be that. Was he licking/chewing his paws prior to this surgery? If yes, I'd be thinking allergies...which can also irritate the passages.

| He has kennel cough!! Can't believe he has got that. He must have picked it up at the vets when his immune system was down. He is on antibiotics. He seems worse during the night and was told to give him cough medicine to help that. It is stressful to hear him cough like that.

I know it's hard for you this situation! Like us if we have cough we know exactly how pain it is to our throat. But I found out that even it's sound terrible to hear your dog coughing like that don't worry he will recover soon on my research some of dog will recover even without a treatment, but it's better to consult your vet to give you some vitamins or antibiotic for his cough to make him feel better if the vet finds out that he need it. Good luck hope he will get better soon! I pray for you guys. | |

| No, I have never given him the KC vaccination before as never had a reason to. Alfie always comes on holiday with us so he has never stayed in the kennels and never dreamed of him getting it from the vets. Do you think this is something they need to get annually now?

I agree with Wylie's Mom about the vaccination. We don't give it to our boys.

| Thanks, Penny seems to have it now too so she's on antibiotics too. I don't think I have slept proper in a week as Alfie seems to get worse at night so he has us up. Just hoping it clears soon as it's awful to watch them. DH is so annoyed with the vets but what can you do, there is going to be sick dogs in there and who knows one of my two may have infected someone else's when I took them back to see about it.
