| .........immaculate conception......???? Who is the male that was with this female when she was in heat? Do you know the signs of a female dog in heat? They must be protected from males when they are in heat or this is what happens....I am thrilled she was able to have this pup and it didnt kill her. You need to keep accurate records so you will know when this lady is about to come back into heat......Congratulations and good luck with your new addition....I would advise you to get rapidly informed about nursing mothers and what they need to prevent eclampsia and to provide that puppy with the absolute best start in life it can possibly have, under the circumstances and in spite of all the unknowns. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Wow, were you lucky. This could have had a very different outcome, I hope everything goes well, and you have a good vet. They will need their shots before being placed in pet homes around the age of 12 weeks. Remember that even though they are weaned the mother is teaching them important socialization skills, such as inhibition of the biting reflex. I hope you read about finding a good home for the dogs and how to educate the new owners on Yorkie ownership. Yorkies aren't for everyone and need lots of training and vet care, especially tooth care, which can be very expensive. I hope you encourage the owners to get the dogs fixed and not become breeders, people shouldn't breed their pets. I also hope you get Bella fixed. I know her diet is very important, but there is so much misinformation going around about what to give her, I hope you can get with someone who knows what they are talking about. Best of luck!

Offer momma cottage cheese, and QUALITY dog food specifically for nursing mommas....I am not sure Royal Canin sells breeders formula unless you are a breeder....if not, you need to go to a pet food store and purchase dog food SPECIFICALLY for nursing mommas....she needs to watched closely for signs of eclampsia (tremors, convulsions, and stiffness in legs, and followed by death) since she has not been nurtured thru this pregnancy with a diet that was geared for developing puppies and whelping. Have momma and puppy checked by your vet to be sure momma passed all afterbirth....and that the puppy is healthy. You can supplement mommas diet with a calcium powder designed for nursing mommas....you can also fix her a whelping pudding that is excellent....THANKS TO MARY MARDELIN OF MARDELIN YORKSHIRE TERRIERS:........ 1 cup goats milk = amt. distilled water 1 beaten egg yolk 1 tbsp karo syrup Momma gets this to drink following birthing.... Also: This is a very nourishing pudding for momma to eat several times during the day: 1 c. evaporated milk (I personally use goats milk) 12 oz distilled water 1 envelope unflavored geletin (dissolved in warm water) 2 well beaten egg yolks 2 tbsp Karo syrup 2 tbsp vanilla yogurt (lo fat) Thank you again Mary of Mardelin Yorkshire Terriers, for this wonderful essential pudding!!..... I also give my mommas scrambled eggs, boiled chicken, offer cheese, offer a little chicken liver boiled,..... Watch to be sure momma is getting enough calcium to prevent eclampsia....I give mine medicine made for that...some people give Tums ....you can also give kipper snacks or sardines if momma will eat them.... | Shes eating good and nursing also. She has a tendency of still wanting to be right by my side but as soon as she hears baby wimpering she takes off running down the hall to her. So swet to watch her! My only concern is that her belly at the bottom is still a little bloated? Is that normal for a nursing momma?

| Have you had a vet look at your momma and the baby since birth???? That is expected postnatal care and must be done for the health of the momma and baby! Also, I NEVER let my mommas walk all over the house, away from the newborn litter....keep momma with the baby....THAT is what is best for momma and baby at this time. She is carrying every disease she picks up on her feet walking all over whereever she walks, right back to that baby!!! |

| Earliest i could get into my vet is tomorrow morning so i have an appointment at 11. Thank you for letting me know about her walking around. She only comes out for about a couple of sec just to see me. But its only me thats here. I tell her to go back to her baby and she will. But i didnt realize the danger of it. Ill make sure she stays in there. I have her food and water in there and i go in there every so often just to let her know im still here and to make sure she and baby is doing ok. I named the new baby Sophia shes so cute.

| I have another concern. Ever since i put the play pen up for her, she only goes potty on the pads that are inside the pen. The pen is in my living room and her and baby is in my room. But the pen wont fit in my room and she only aknowledges the pads when they are in the pen. What should i do about her coming in here to potty?

| My mommas are completely restricted to MY BEDROOM for at least a week before they deliver. She is in a whelping pen at the foot of my bed and she is there for a week before her due date....and after the puppies are born in that whelping pen with me in constant attendance during birth, she is in there with the puppies for at least two weeks, without coming out to visit or walk around, carrying God only knows what, back to the puppies. She and the babies are under 24/7 watch by me...watching for any signs or symptoms that something is amiss. After two weeks, she is allowed to come out alone with me, for just long enough to walk around and potty, then my mommas want to return to their litter. I can not say I have ever had a breeder that wanted to leave her babies....I have to carry them out and place them down....and they want to go back to babies immediately.....on command, they will pee/poop, but then it is right back to babies. The whelping crate which is about 36 inches wide and 76 inches long, stays at the foot of my bed for 8 weeks, at which time momma and babies go to the nursery pen.....48 by 80 inches, with time out in a play area several times during the day. Mommas are also allowed at 6-8 weeks post birth, to spend some quality time away from babies....they enjoy running around outside (on my property in the back yard), fresh air, grass, shade, sunlight, water features, etc....and they then enjoy returning to their kids, without feeling they are being forgotten by me and banished to dealing strictly with babies. Mental and emotional health of breeders is critical and every bit as important as physical health. They are allowed to join our family activities, as the play area the pups and momma are in, is right there in the sunroom, where my son and I are...everyone watches TV....mommas, teach the babies dog life lessons, and we are able to actually observe momma as she teaches her little ones what they should be doing, how to do things they should be doing, and doggie manners! If I did not have room in my bedroom, find a room in the house that can be devoted to momma and baby ONLY! That is where YOU sleep, along side momma and babies, so you are right there, listening and hearing any and all noises that go on, some of which are sweet, precious little sounds indicating all is well....sometimes you have sounds indicating there is/may be a problem or issue. You listen continuously for baby sounds so you know baby is out and about and nursing and not trapped under momma, being smothered to death. For us, breeding and having healthy, thriving puppies, nurtured by mommas that are at the tip top of their game, mentally, physically as well as emotionally, is first and foremost here at Rosehill. This entire home shuts completely down, when there are babies on the property.....there is no one "from the outside", wandering around, looking at or GOD FORBID handling the puppies or upsetting mommas.....we are completely isolated and off limits to everyone when there are puppies on the ground! And when my son or I come inside from outside, we walk thru Virkon solution in a shallow pan by both front and back door.....and outside shoes are then, even after they are treated with the solution, put on a small rug at the back door, and we wear "inside shoes" around the inside of the house. But to me, all this effort assures me that my babies/dogs are completely safe and healthy, physically as well as emotionally and mentally! |

How is Mom & Baby doing ? | |
07-30-2015, 10:40 AM | #12 |
I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, I was interested in how they were doing. Contrary to what you'd think, I've heard that having one baby is more difficult on the mother because it tends to be bigger, also, how do you know she expelled everything? Anyway, please let us know how's she's doing.

| Congratulations on your new puppy. Post pictures when you can. Rosehill Yorkies has given you lots of good information! I'm surprised at her having only one puppy. Is this common for yorkies? Was the father of this puppy, her father too? If so I would ask the vet, should that cause any health issues. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I welcome your luck on a successful whelp - but I wonder why the vet did not catch the fact that your female was pregnant when you brought her in for her wellness check? That is standard practice for a new owner to do when they purchase a dog or for that matter *rescue* a dog.... I hope everything goes smoothly at the vet tomorrow.
