| Severe allergies Hi All. I need some input with my little 10yr old baby. She is chewing all the hair off her legs making 1 bleed. I am so concerned about her getting infected. The last time I posted she was having tests for losing protein......she is on Enalapril 2x. a day & low dose venison aspirin. My vet who I love is not one to use a lot of steroids but my baby finished Ketaconozole which did nothing for her allergies. I feed her d-d prescription food. Prescription venison. Treats shampoo from vet & resicort in between shampoos. Nothing is helping. I know Apoquel is not available until January but who knows if they will have enough .i am going to ask the vet if it's possible for her to be allergic to any of the meds. I've only had her for 2 yrs a. Little sweetheart but I have no info on her. Sorry this is so long but I am really needing help |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Mine had severe itching and lots of hair loss on my yorkie & my yorkie-poo. The vet said to bathe them in the purple Johnson Baby Shampoo & nothing else & switched them to prescription D/D Salmon canned & hard food & the improvements are amazing. My Yorkipoo had actually had spots on his sides that were so raw & would bleed too. I am amazed at the difference in him & my tiny yorkie. They both had been eating Prescription I/D that my other yorkie eats for tummy trouble- she is doing great on it but it must have something that the other 2 were very allergic too. The only other treats they get are green beans.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I've dealt w/ allergies in 2 of mine. They're awful. When it starts to affect their quality of life like it is w/ your kiddo, you really do need to medicate...despite what the vet wants to do...the vet isn't the one living w/ feeling miserable w/ allergies, the doggie is. If these are year round allergies, then you may want to try Atopica - which can be a miracle for many dogs. It takes about 6 weeks to fully ramp-up the med, then you cut back on the med a bit. Marcel takes his Atopica 2x a week now and that seems to be okay. We can't get Apoquel here right now. As you're ramping up on Atopica, I'd also be giving her some IMMEDIATE relief using either Temaril-P (an anti-histamine + a little steroid) or pure steroids. | Hi Wylies Mom I was told by the vet my baby cannot take Atopika because of her situation with the protein and the Enalapril.I do think I will call and ask if they c an see her ASAP she is miserable & biting. Maybe we can try short term steroids to give her alittle reprieve . She's a sweet little girl .allergies when we got her. They dont give you any info. Thanks |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi Jeanne - I have not heard of Atopica and an issue w/ protein...did the vet say why this is contraindicated, specifically? I wonder if he's just being overly cautious, or if there truly is a valid issue. I'd be interested to know what it was. Also wondering why there was a concern w/ Enalapril and Atopica...ie, what the interaction btwn them is...? I'm just always curious about this kind of stuff. I sure hope you can find something that works bc allergies are just miserable. Are they seasonal, do you think? If yes, then Temaril-P and/or pure steroids might be a wonderful option for you. Sure wish you could get some Apoquel somehow.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Check the food. My poodle had terrible skin allergies and the derm dr. said to put her on venison base food. It cleared her up. plus use a hypo allergenic shampoo. I use hy-lyte I get from my vet. Today dog food has so many allergic things in it. Really watch what is in the food and you may see improvement. I went to the pet store to buy treats for my boys and all the treats had junk in them. |

| Allergies Hi, I have an appt Thursday. With the vet. I'm going to ask about the steroids . My baby needs relief. It's heartbreaking to watch & not be able to do anything. I am sure these are year round allergies , she comes in from her walk & is in the grass really itches & scoots a lot & does the crawl on her belly. She's eating the venison has no vomiting or diarrhea. So we'll see tomorrow, hope the shot makes her feel better. I may take her to a Derm. See what happens. Let you know. |

| Severe allergies Hi, Took my Daisy to the vet today. She gave her a shot of cortisone, took her off the venison aspirin told me to stop the flax seed oil I was giving her. Put her on Medrol for 10 days & free form fatty acid snip tips in place of the flax seed.We did discuss Atopika again so I guess we'll see how this works and go from here.told me to put her in the sink every time she comes in with soapy water to get the pollen or whatever off her feet.I've been using baby wipes guess it's not the same. I'll let you know but I probably will do the Atopika seems to be a lot of side effects .today the vet thought it would be fine.!! |

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Definitely a vet dermatologist is needed when the skin gets bad. Vets will give cortisone and I really don't think they are as knowledgeable in the skin meds as the derm doc. Now the derm dr costs more but it is worth the money to get the results. I would not keep giving cortisone shots. Also the diet is important and the derm dr. has tests for that. I hope your baby gets some relief soon. |
