allergies? Chewie has these pustules/pimples and I have no idea how to get rid of them. It looks like a pimple in the starting stage, and then they dry out. He started getting them last year after a grooming, so we took him to the vet and she said it's probably a bacterial infection from not drying him properly and the heat. She gave us some antibiotics for 2 weeks and the pustules seemed to subside, not gone, but fewer. He still got one or two every few weeks but nothing major.I washed him with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal shampoo but that didn't help. *A month and a half ago he started getting them again, mostly around his tail and on his back legs and they seem to be itchy because he keeps trying to scratch them. I went to the vet again, and she said it's allergies, and she gave us some antibiotics to prevent infection from scratching and to give him benadryl. She said to give him half a pill (12.5 mg) but that seemed a lot for a 8.5 lb dog; I took one pill a few months ago and it knocked me out and I am 120 lb... So I gave him a quarter of a tablet last night, but that didn't help. I also stopped giving him fruits in an effort to find out to what is he allergic, but it wasn't that. I feed him Fromm, I waa thinking of switching to Acana or Orijen, maybe he developed an allergy to it.... Any other suggestions?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Ugh, allergies are SO frustrating...believe me, I know. I have 2 that deal with them. First, food allergies are very, very rare - so I highly doubt there is one. That said, it can be supportive to have an allergy dog on a grain free or low-grain diet as it's considered less inflammatory to the system in general. To me, it sounds like he has enviro allergies (ie, pollen, dust or whatnot). You first need to figure out if these allergies are year round, or seasonal. If year round, you'd want to treat w/ OTC antihistamines (rarely ever work), Temaril-P, Atopica (very good), Apoquel (also good), or do allergy testing and desensitization. If seasonal, you'd treat w/ OTC's, Temaril-P, steroids, or even Apoquel. Benadryl and other OTC's are VERY rarely ever seen to work, but they sometimes do. But w/ Benadryl, you'd have to give it 4x a day as it's half-life is super short and it just wears off. The OTC's most Vet Dermatologists recommend are Zyrtec and Claritin bc they last for a full 24 hours. Also, you always want to try any OTC med for at least 10 days before assessing it's effectiveness. To me, it sounds like your kiddo has recurrent pyoderma (ie, staph intermedius overgrowth on the skin) - which is usually treated with Simplicef for a full 30 days to get rid of it. Is this the med you've been using? If not, that's what I'd be asking for. Also...are there ANY other weird symptoms? Some dogs who get recurrent skin infections actually have hypothyroid or Cushings...so keep that in the back of your mind as you go forward. My very best advice to you is to get to a Vet Derm ASAP. You can either spend hundreds and hundreds at your generalist vet (this is what I did...sigh) OR, go right away to a Vet Derm and get squared away from the get go. Vet Derm appt's will be more upfront...but will cost you WAY less in the long run. Otherwise, please def ask your vet about getting on Atopica or Apoquel if these are year round allergies. Lastly, get this shampoo, it's what Vet Derm's recommend but charge 4x this price at the vet office: Amazon.com : Douxo Chlorhexidine PS + Climbazole... And read this thread for more info on how to approach allergies in dogs: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

I don't know what he got the first time, some antibiotic for 2 weeks and Clavamox the second time for 5 days. Both times the pustules seemed to go away, that is why I think it might be a skin infection...I used Malaseb, because I found a thread that was saying it's good, but I didn't see any difference... I ordered some Simplicef from the internet, 10 pills 100mg each (according to the site you are supposed to give them 2.3mg-4.5mg per pound, and Chewie is 8.5 lb, so I guess 1/3 pill is enough), now let's see if the vet will approve the request...

Yeah, why did I think it will be easy? I talked to the vet, she said she will approve it, no problem, just to go and see her in about 2 weeks to see how Chewie is doing. Like I am going to give her $65 just to tell me he is ok. Of course I didn't tell her that, I said ok, we will go... Guess what she did? She approved the meds only for 5 pills, which will last only for 20 days... I really hate how medicine became a business and they are trying to rob you any way they can

Did you talk to her about Atopica or Apoquel, or are you going to a vet derm for that instead?

I was thinking of going with the antibiotics first and see if that clears it. If it doesn't that means it's an allergy and we will go this route.

Simplicef doesn't work for fungal infections, but this doesn't sound like one...?

The pustules look like this in the beginning: http://www.vet.utk.edu/dermvet/image...20pustules.JPG and something like this when they dry out (in one or two days):http://www.organic-pet-digest.com/im...4-21679084.jpg The good news is that I called the vet and asked them to approve the Simplicef for 30 days and they did. Question: How often should I bathe him, and should I use normal shampoo ( I use Jerob) or an anti-bacterial one (Is Malaseb ok, or should I get something else?)

If you can, Vet Derms usually recommend you bathe them every 3-4 days with something like Duoxo shampoo. You can try the Malaseb too, but the Duoxo would be a bit better...you could also alternate btwn the 2.
