Rawhide Replacement What is a good replacement for rawhide? Lady is 9 weeks and teething so loves to chew. I originally bought the rawhide sticks but then upon research decided it's not something I want to give to my pup but the sticks are perfect size for her so what do you give your puppies? I saw something the other day called greenies? I feed Blue Buffalo and haven't given any treats or other foods yet so I'm not sure what to buy or make> |
I like CET chews (size up, don't get petites), Honest Kitchen Beams, RMBs (raw meaty bones) and a few other things. |
We did rawhide chews , stuck in the end of a Kong toy for quite a while. They could have them when sitting at my feet and they were replaced daily. I decided that they just weren't very good for them. Greenies can choke a tiny baby if they break off a chunk. The girls are now chewing on split antlers. I do have to be careful when they are new to not let them have them for very long. The center is very rich and can upset tummies. I haven't had any problems with splintering. The girls are still required to sit at my feet or beside me to have them. Usually so I can have some computer time for YT. |
My girls LOVE Churpi Chews aka Himalayan Chews. They are fantastic and provide hours of chewing pleasure. They also love free range buffalo ears. These chews are very thin (you can see through them), they last a long time and don't get slimy after a chewing session. |
I use the CET rawhide chews.....always when the kiddos are supervised, and I buy the giant size....these things ar 3-4 inches wide and about 6-9 inches long. No fear of them getting the thing wedged in their mouth. I watch them chew on the ends and when the ends get chewy and slimy, I take kitchen scissors and cut that off so they are back to knawing on the hard part. Just read somewhere, bad reviews on Greenies. I dont like my dogs ingesting stuff that I use for knawing/teeth cleaning. Reminds me of us eating our toothbrushes! A neighbor was giving her pup Greenies...her kids were feeding those things like they were candy treats! Pup ended up with bloody diarrhea and some intestinal lacerations from eating Greenies! |
Bully sticks antlers and things like them can break teeth. Have you tried any of the puppy chew toys? I also like naked chews and I will probably be shamed for this but Callie is CRAZY about the new milkbone dental chews. She also loves the beams from honest kitchen. |
I'm using Hartz Oinkies, I but them at target. They won't crack teeth like Himalayans and antlers and hard bones. I like that it smells like bacon. I tried the bulky sticks and can't get past the smell. |

http://www.hartzvictims.org/2006/03/...-bad-reaction/ I use Purina Chews, they're kind of like CET chews. I get them on chewy.com in a box. They don't last Jackson long, he's a pretty hard chewer, but they're decent enough and never caused any stomach upset, etc. They're also VOHC approved so I have faith that they are actually somewhat cleaning his teeth in the process. He gets a bully stick every once in a while. Maybe once or twice a month now. They got too pricey for me. But never caused any issues. I like the Barkworthies brand, also on chewy.com We had tried the new Milkbone dental chews but he didn't seem to like them too much after the first one and I believe they caused him to have an upset stomach, so we'll stick to Dentastix for his 'quick' treat. |

dog I get the CET chews. Get the extra large size and when they start to chew off a piece I cut it off. If these start to get gummy, I take them away. You must watch your dog with any chew. They could choke on it. |

I give him bully sticks, he chews as much as he wants and when it's really small (around an inch) I just throw it away and give him another. I tried the antlers but they are too hard(I think) and he doesn't like them... |
