Vet prescription filling fee? When my mom went to pick up Callie's thyroid medicine and then Sammy's Ct medicine Friday they I guess started this new thing called a filling fee for $11.00 does anyone else's vet do this? Sammy's medicine is pretty expensive so my mom likes to get it monthly rather then every three months like I do with Callie but wow $11 more seems like a lot! I normally love my vet but I plan to ask about it this Friday because Callie needs to go in anyway. My grandmother is also a bit pissed because we spend so much time and money there. How should I go about bringing this up I don't wanna sound like a b**** or anything. |

Have not heard of this. $11 is a lot! I googled and found at amva.org that some states have "specific guidance for veterinarians on prescription fees." Whether this means the state requires it, or regulates it, it doesn't say. It might be that the office if trying to cover the vet's time -- because they do look at the chart before writing the prescription/refilling. Still, $11 is high. |
Never heard of such a thing... but agree with Kristin, could be a fee for the vet techs time but still $11 seems a bit extreme. Have you checked into other Pharmacies that carry pet meds. It sure was a blessing when Brandi needed several medications. Not only did it save on gas because our vet is 45 min away and the pharmacist in only 3mins. It save us so much money. Not all pet meds are available in human form but if they are the pharmacist is so much cheaper. All you would need is a prescription or have your vet call it into the store of your choice. |
Yes, I have heard of vets doing this. I guess they are trying to cover the cost of employees and their time; but I also would not care for it and I do think that $11 is costly. Taylor, I think you should simply ask why they are doing it. If my vet started charging a fee like that I would definitely question it! You might look into getting meds elsewhere. You need to price check them each time but that is just a couple of phone calls to pharmacies. Of course with regular meds, you can already just call pharmacies for prices and compare. I would let the vet know that you will be doing that and will ask for a prescription if you need it. You are not being a b**** .. you are a consumer and have a right to know what you are paying for! |
Very common. It is costly to stock drugs, regulate temp, make room for them, counting, printing, usage explanation, etc. I guess some even suggest charging $20 for overhead alone on each med. That said, I get your frustration and would be unhappy. It is worth asking if a deal can be worked out/fee waived for long-term meds. I guess we have a dispensing fee here. No idea how much. It isn't $11 though. Pill cutting (if over x number of pills) is a few dollars. You can get a script, but a vet can charge for that service. |

It's common in the human world to have a filling fee, I suppose it was only a matter of time before gets did it, too. Can you look to see if you can get the medicine at Target or Wal Mart? Mail order might be another option. |
One of our news programs did a story on pet meds and vet fees. Turns out most are available at a human dispensary for almost half the price. Do you know it have you researched the meds to find out if that's the case. Because you could ask them for the prescription and get it filled elsewhere. We also have pet dispensaries here too that are way cheaper than vet meds, is that available in your area. Here is a link to a company that sells meds cheaper. I cannot use it as the vet association here controls the pricing and will not allow the company to sell in Canada. But you can shop from the US |

Be very careful about online Canadian pharmacies! I used to order from one but they started sending me meds from other countries....I could barely make out what they were on the labels. That was the end of that! I recently saw something on TV about the fact that some of the pharmacies from other countries are using Canadian names. Wish I could remember what show...will try to find it. |
Do you recollect if this was one of the online stores you dealt with as a few friends of mine in the states shope here for their heartworm meds and antibiotics. Let me know as I'll pass along your warning. |
I'm surprised so many of you have had luck at human pharmacies. I tried to get my poodle's meds there and couldn't because the doses she needed were too small, she was 13lbs. I think the $11 fee is ridiculous, especially since your meds aren't a one time deal. I've never been charged a filling fee for myself or my pet, didn't even know they existed. |
Taylor, if they won't waive the fee you might want to check with some US veterinary pharmacies for pricing (Diamondback and Wickliffe). I get Ellie's Gabapentin from Diamondback. It is the same price as the local pharmacy that can make her size capsule but Diamondback does liquid which I prefer. After shipping costs I'm paying the same and don't have to get out of my pajamas. lol. But if your vet charges to write or call in scripts it may not be a deal for you. |
