| Fleas? Dry skin? Help!! My 7 year old yorkie had fleas so I read a few forums online saying that a Dawn dish soap bath would help... So I bathed him with Dawn and later that night he was still itching... Sooo I used some Hartz flea and tick medicine on him. (before you start with all the horrible things about that brand and all the awful things it's done to many poor puppies, I know!) He started acting super sick (moping around, not eating) so I called the vet and they told me to immediately wash him again with dawn and bring him in. So I bathed him and he immediately started acting normal again after the bath so I decided to wait it out and not take him to the vet... But here is the thing... He is STILL ITCHING LIKE CRAZY. His skin is red and dry and itchy... Could he still have fleas? I don't see any on him and I don't think after all of that, they could still be there. So maybe it's just dry skin? Any remedies for dry skin?! Help. I feel awful for my poor itchy baby! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | He could still be itching from the fleas, sure, but I also wonder if he's actually itching from the irritation of the Hartz solution since it affected him so strongly. If he has actual red patches on his skin, then I'd be concerned about pyoderma (staph intermedius infection), which must be treated w/ antibiotics.

YT 2000 Club Member | He is probably allergic or sensitive to the flea product you used on him! We have a dog that is very allergic to any and all flea medication! She had such a severe reaction once that our vet told us to never use any flea meds on her. She broke out in a horrible rash, bright red skin and intense itching. We bathed her right away and rushed her to the vet. They had to give her shots at the office and then an oral medication until her skin cleared. Thankfully we haven't had fleas in our area for a long time!

| I agree, sounds like a reaction to the Hartz. Many people have reported similar problems with it. My Teddy has reactions to flea bites. All it takes is one flea to cause a whole lot of problems. I would go ahead and see the vet. Our vet gave us a topical spray that helped Teddy. It isn't an over-the-counter med.

| Dogs, if they're going to have a reaction to fleas are allergic to the flea saliva. So most likely, even tho you don't see fleas on him, a flea(s) bit him & he is itching...it takes a few days to weeks to go away.

| Also, winter is so harsh on their skin & our's...it dries it out & the heater exasperates the situation. The dry skin could be from that along w/flea allergic dermatitis...one very itchy pup! Dawn is great bc the pH is similar to pet shampoo, but it is drying, gets all the grease out. It should be followed by a good conditioner, leave it on for 5-10 mins. Wrap your pup up in a warm towel so he doesn't get too cold. BTW, you can use reg pet shampoo, fleas don't like the water & any shampoo will do. Make sure you wet the pup's head 1st, put a ring of shampoo around the neck so the fleas do not get a chance to run to the top.

YT 3000 Club Member | chester gets temaril p which is antihistamine and prednisone if he has the ithies really bad. Hartz flea stuff has alot of complaints, that is one product that I would not use personally,, salmon oil helps overall for the skin stuff as well especially if they have enviromential allergies |

| Just took my little one in to the vet today for excessive itching. She said that it could be an allergy from something she was exposed to a few weeks ago....once flared up the allergies just kept going. So, maybe possible that yours is still reacting from the fleas or Hartz you gave. They gave Rory a steroid and anti-histamine. One thing to look for is to make sure your little one isn't itching so bad that they get a skin infection. That can happen pretty quickly with lots of rubbing and itching. |

| I did the dawn soap thing and it also made my guy worse. Try spraying him down with a dilution of organic apple cider vinegar and distilled or filtered water after the bath and rubbing it into his skin, let it dry and apply organic coconut oil. Repeat this daily. He may have had a reaction to the use of the dawn and the hartz and just needs his skin to heal. Chia seeds are really high in omega 3 so you could also soak some and mix with his food and that may also help. |

| I wouldn't give your dog steroids, they work by shutting down the immune system in order to do what they need to do. What you want to do is let his system heal and his immune system strengthen. You could also give him a probiotic, this will encourage healthy gut flora and keep his insides happy which makes the outside happy. Has the itching only been an issue since the fleas. If you can find a natural shampoo without oatmeal, give him a bath in that. Run the flea comb over him a few times check around the tail and bum and groin as well as the neck and head. The little buggers like the warm bits. Omega Alpha Pharmaceuticals - Probiotic 8 Plus |

| My Oreo had an itching problem too and I took him to the vet. They gave him some benedryl tablets and a tablet that looks like fish oil capsoles. His itching has calm down a bit too. She also recommended a Mousse for dogs called Douxo. It has two types: Seborrhea Mousse and Calm Mousse. These help from dryness during the winter months. TJ and Oreo |
