| C.E.T dental chews ? I just purchased these for my baby. I am just wondering if the C.E.T Dental chews are edible for dogs? Or are the dental sticks just supposed to be chewed? |

| I don't think they are meant to be eaten and I don't let my boys swallow any part of the C.E.T. chews. Be very careful with them. They can be major choking hazards. I hold the chews while my guys work on them. Depending on the dog, the C.E.T. chew can be turned into a rubbery, wet potato chip like thing. Many dogs will try to swallow it. Wylie's Mom almost lost one of her pups this way. She was able to perform the Heimlich and revive her boy. Often using a larger size with a small dog helps, but not with my guys. Max managed to swallow one and I had to pull one out of Teddy's throat when they got away from me. Not all dental chews are alike. Some can be swallowed, like Greenies, but those may me nervous too.

| Kristin, how can they... NOT be eaten? I guess I'm confused. lol. I thought a chew would eventually slowly be gnawed away. Jackson's had those CET chews in the past and he would chew it. I would keep an eye on him though and once it got small, I would take it away and trash it. It's not like he's eating it like he would a treat, but as he chews, he's obviously consuming some.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog All chews are dangerous and could cause choking. My vet sells the CET chews. I got a bag but those things are so thin. My JoJo bites a piece off and he could easily swallow it. I am very careful with those, only the thick ones and when they get gummy or a piece coming off I take it away. Most of the time my boys get no chews. Just too dangerous. |

| This is the C.E.T. chew that we use: Virbac C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Rawhide Dog Chews at PETCO Quote:
When I asked the same questions in the past, breeders here told me that they use the medium size chews and that their dogs (smaller than my guys) can't get a piece off. Since they are rawhide, I don't think it is good for the dogs to ingest.

| Brit, are those the same chews Jackson has had? He must have sharp teeth like Teddy.

I tried the CET veggie chews once, they're more like... dentastix-ish, kind of, but he did not like them.

| I don't like the CET chews either. I have one dog who is a very nice chewer but the rest are idiots. I have had to stick my fingers down throats to retrieve edible chews. A scope on a small dog can run upwards of a couple of thousand dollars and it happens all the time. It's just not worth it. My dogs have decent teeth from regular tooth brushing and they have other things they can do for stimulation. If they want to chew, they have flexible nylabones here which work for them.

If I'm understanding correctly, the only problem with our babies eating these dental chews is that there's a risk of possibly chocking from biting off big pieces and swollowing? Or is the problem related more to issues that can occur internally? Sorry for hmaking this so confusing! | |

| After Jax's first dental recently, the vet suggested the CET chews. Our dogs gobble them up in just a few minutes. I didn't know they weren't supposed to!! |

The consensus appears to be that they are meant to be eaten. However, I have received different answers when I asked the same question in this forum a couple years ago. Either way, keep in mind that these are rawhide which is known to potentially cause internal blockages. The biggest danger of these chews: choking and potential blockage. Wylie's Mom, the chief mod here, almost lost one of her dogs to choking on one of these. If your pup is smart and only swallows small pieces at a time, you probably won't have a problem. Also, I would use the medium size and not the small strips. My dogs are crazy and try to swallow them in big pieces or whole. You would be surprised what can get into a little throat. We used Merrick's Texas Toothpicks, which are edible tail pieces with a narrow, soft-ish bone in the middle. Teddy got a piece stuck in his throat. He threw up and something went wrong. His eyes were rolling back and he went limp. I thought he was dying. With any chew, know your dog's chewing capabilities, supervise closely, and be extra cautious. Some people may think I am overly cautious and a party pooper, but if they had seen little Teddy go limp, they would understand.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Like Kristin mentioned, I almost lost Marcel to a petite size CET chew. The petite size are *much* different than the larger size in texture/make...the pieces come off much easier and could easily get lodged in the throat and bc of their gummy/mushy texture when wet, very hard to dislodge! Now, even though that happened to me - I still think CET chews have great teeth benefits. BUT. BUT, I recommend sizing UP for your dogs. Like for Marcel, for example, the petite is technically the correct size - but I give him the Medium size so that he can't get a piece off of it - he can only just gnaw at it. Our Wylie is larger than Marcel and is a very aggressive chewer, and Mediums work for him too....he can get teensy shreds off of the chew but it never able to get a choke-able chunk off. Hope that helps!
