Yorkie Yakker | For goodness sakes! What is happening??? Hello All! My name is Lauren and my one year and two month old baby has been very sick. It all started about 3 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago tomorrow morning i took Sony and my other baby Stella to get their Bordatella vaccines because they were going to have to be boarded while i went to Florida last week (required). That day they were fine and being really playful. That evening, they were tired which wasn't unusual because they had run quite a few errands with me that day. Tuesday morning i am doing my normal readying process and i turn around to find that Sony had gotten a leaf from my palm tree and was chewing on it. I immediately removed it from her mouth. It had no chunks missing but she had slobbered all over it. I had no choice but to leave, but i was worried about it. I get home at 3:30 and there is a pile of diarrhea in and a vomit in their playpen. I call the vet and they do research on the plant (wasn't sure if it was the oral bordatella vaccine or the plant that caused the problem or something else.) They insisted that bordatella side effects are usually respiratory related and after researching the plant said that it could cause diarrhea and vomiting. Since it had been eight hours they said that it was probably the worst it was going to get. Since she was still playing and ate her dinner i settled down a bit. After we got back that evening Sony had diarrhea again and also vomited a bit a second time. Wednesday morning i wake up to the sound of Stella's desperate barks at 6:30. It is unusual for her to bark before i am up. I leap out of bed and run into their room only to find that there is diarrhea EVERYWHERE. and i mean EVERYWHERE. Poor Stella was standing in it. I rush both of them outside to potty and they both had diarrhea. I immediately call the vet and take off from work that day. Unfortunately, i had to get a vet that i was not familiar with. After doing a parvo test (just for the record my dogs are properly vaccinated) and it coming back negative (phew!) he seemed like he didn't know what to do. He sent me home with anti-diarrheal and anti-vomiting medicines as well as flagyl. Sure enough, a day passes and no more diarrhea. Stella quickly gets back to normal. Sony on the other hand, does not. She went from diarrhea to being constipated so i took her off the anti-diarrheal. A few days pass and she continues to what seems to be struggling to poo and is very lethargic. So i again i call the vet and this time get to see the vet i know and trust. She does a cbc blood panel and the machine malfunctioned so we didn't get to see accurate results (she didn't charge me for the panel.) She thought it could be a certain type of bacterial infection so she sent me home with another antibiotic and some carafate. A few more days pass and still no change.... If anything her appetite was decreasing and she was not drinking on her own. My vet sends me to the other office to redo the cbc test. The results came back and all her numbers looked really good. A few more days pass... still no change... lethargic... not a very good appetite.... still seeming to struggle to poo.... To top things off she develops a green and irritated gunky eyeball. I go to the vet and get antibiotic ointment for that. I head back to the vet yet another time... this time to do an x-ray. The x-ray showed no obstruction in the gi-tract. Everything looked good with that. what she did notice was that her heart looked funny. It was a strange shape and didn't look like it was pumping down like it should. So we proceed with a sonogram. The doc said that her heart has a few thin spots. She decided she wanted a second opinion so i brought her back two days later for another sonogram where she collaborated with a second vet. He said that her heart did have a thin spot, was an odd shape, some of the ventricles looked kind of long, and that the heart didn't crunch down really hard. They said that at this time they would not diagnose her with a heart problem and that it would be premature to give her heart medicine. They told me to keep an eye on her. Then she started urinating and squatting frequently. I mean it was constant. SO the doctor gives her a shot for a urinary tract infection. we still don't know what caused the diarrhea and vomiting for those two days. But the doc thinks that the eye too was just a fluke that happened at the same time. She thinks her eye got scratched or had something in it and it grew and ulcer or cyst (not sure which she said) that then popped. Much to my chagrin, i had to leave Sony at the vet while i went to florida last week. Before i left her, her eye was looking alot better. But she was still squatting incessantly. I called on Tuesday of last week and they told me that she wasn't squatting in her cage anymore so i thought the shot was working. I call again a day or two after and they told me the bladder issue was still about the same even though she had started eating kibble again when mixed with wet food. Still not drinking on her own though. They are still syringing fluids to her. He electrolyte levels were good because i was diligent with giving her fluids. Since the bladder issue wasn't any better i had a urinalysis done. It didn't show any bacteria. Just that it was a little more highly concentrated than normal. (I failed to mention earlier that when the vet did the second sonogram she checked for stones or crystals and everything looked clear. I have sent the urine off to be cultured. They have started Sony on a special urinary tract food. Needless to say, i am very frustrated. I pick Sony up tomorrow morning. All i want to do is help her. I love her very much. It broke my heart to be separated from her. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong???? Has anyone had a situation like this before? I am running out of ideas and money. I have only been able to pay for what i have with monetary assistance from my loving family. After tomorrow we will have spent well over 1,000 dollars. I am unable to keep spending money. Any suggestions i will certainly take into consideration!!!!! Thank you so much for your time, i know this was a lot to read and take in. |

| I would think you need a specialist to look at her heart.

| What kind of palm was this? I'd be concerned, did they check her kidney function? Praying you find the answers you seek and both pups are well again. Do keep us posted.

| I doubt that it was a sago palm as they usually kill very quickly and this has been going on for weeks. At least I hope it was not one. Those horrible things are deadly.

| Good to hear it wasn't a Sago. I realize it, a Sago Palm, can be deadly and quickly...but the OP mentioned that she had it in her mouth, but it was not eaten...Anyway, hope you find out what's been ailing her soon. I've been praying for her.
