Eyes tearing What causes this? What can we do? Also noticed an odor. Don't know if it is from the eyes tearing or food left on the beard. Pam |
What are you feeding? If there is an odor you might want to discuss with vet. I know some foods made my girls worse than others. |
The odor could be from any number of things. Do you notice any paw licking or itching? It could be yeast, and if so, you may want to change to a high quality, grain free food. For the tearing eyes, you might consider trying Gerber Nursery Water. It's $1. a gallon at Walmart, and is sold in the grocery department (water isle). It has helped us with weepy eyes and tear stains. I hope this helps. |
We are feeding Blue Buffalo. I will try the water. Pam |
Is this site giving good advice? Zoey tears up a lot too but I was told it was somewhat "normal" for her.. I just wipe her eyes once in a while. Eye Discharge From Yorkies | eHow |

I noticed that Zoey usually tears up (like she's about to cry) when she's tired usually... I usually just wipe it away with my hands but I think I will try out the water you suggested. Maybe I should just incorporate the water to the daily grooming. |

My dog used to get such bad tear stains, the yeast or whatever you call it would clump up and I could have to gently pull it out with a warm/wet paper towel. Sometimes I would cut it out, using scissors meant for cutting around a dogs eyes. We used to feed our dogs store brand dog food, I now know how bad that stuff is. We switched them to Wellness about 6months ago, but Zoey kept having the tear stains and clumps. She was eating some of the most expensive dog food, but was still have issues. In the past 1.5months I've been feeding them Natures Recipe, it's not nearly as expensive ($1.79-$1.99) per can of regular and $2.58 for a can of grain free. The dogs get both grain free and regular, along with Blue Buffalo (sometimes) and her tear stains and clumps are completely gone. She's not pawing at her face as much anymore either. So, definitely try and change the dog food. |
Having a odor might be yeast infection. I would recommend you take your dog to the vet. Here is an interesting read on tear staining: Mobile Site Preview |
