| Vaccines and Weaning My Rosie had a singleton 8 weeks ago. He is doing well being introduced to eating on his own, etc but she still lets him nurse maybe around 2 or 3 times per day. I don't mind since I want him to have the antibodies from her milk until he is vaccinated. However, does he need to be fully weaned when he gets his first vaccines or can he still nurse occasionally after the vaccines? I have read that the antibodies he gets from Mom's milk will reduce the effectiveness of his vaccines. How do you all handle this? Thanks. |

| I start my vaccinations on my babies at 8 weeks old...and they are still nursing a couple of times a day....moms milk slowly dimenishes in the antibiodies it contains, so that by 6-8 weeks of age, there is not a problem with interferring with the effectiveness of your vaccinations. You want that baby to be allowed to suckle as long as mom will allow it...that is like a pacifier to these babies and momma lovingly nurtures her baby all the while, teaching and bonding lovingly, until 12-14 weeks of age....by then, momma will have that baby off her! I always allow my mommas to wean their babies from sucking...alot of times they are not getting milk, they are just getting the security and warmth and loving protectiveness and closeness provided by momma during that time....my current momma Karina, has her singleton, Vixen, and she is 8 weeks old today. Vixen is eating RC Starter Puppy Mousse and the Starter Kibble, but she still loves to snuggle with her momma at "sleepy time" and suck. Karina encircles and loving watches her baby girl suck, Karina grooms her baby, and she will allow her to fall asleep, sucking. It is sooo adorable.....people that get their babies before 12-14 weeks old have no idea what that enfant has been robbed of.... Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 02-13-2013 at 02:58 PM. |

| The puppies got all of the antibodies in the first two weeks, in the colostrum. They can still nurse when you give them their vaccine, but I would wait until 12 weeks. New studies by Pfizer have shown that puppies who receive one vaccine at 12 weeks are 100% immune to the disease. This article explains it really well: Taking The Risk Out Of Puppy Shots » Dogs Naturally Magazine. Here's a copy to the study as well: http://cp.vetlearn.com/Media/Publica...X_01_01_35.pdf Before 6 weeks most vaccines will be useless thanks to the mom's antibodies, but this isn't because the puppies are still nursing. It's because their immune systems are still protected from the colostrum they got in the first couple of weeks.
