Yorkie Yakker | Finicky eater Hello all! My 1 year old yorkie is so picky it seems! I worry about her not getting enough food. I know that if a dog is hungry it will eat... but stella is starting to wear me down. Some days she will eat 1/4 cup twice a day... Some days she will only eat one 1/4 cup... and then there are days like yesterday when she only maybe ate half of a quarter cup. It drives me nuts. lol. The only reason i am not too alarmed is because her poo is fine and she is her normal playful self. When she was a young puppy i had her on a schedule and she ate really good. But as she has gotten older she has gotten pickier. I haven't switched her food a whole lot for fear that i will make her even more picky. I did switch her from her old puppy food (that she didn't seem to like that much anyway) back in November because it was giving her gas problems. When i switched i gave her the option of Wysong or Innova EVO. SHe didn't like the Wysong but she seem to really like the EVO. So this time around she got the EVO and seemed to like it for a few days. Now she is back to turning her nose up. I blame myself because for treats i have made her home made liver treats and egg whites... But she doesn't get them every day. Only every so often. She never gets table scraps. Also when she was younger i gave her some fresh pet (the one in the tube) Mixed with her food to get her to eat regular but i stopped giving it to her because it doesn't last very long. That was back in September of last year. The only time she has consistently eaten two meals a day in recent times was back in November when she was boarded at a really nice place where she played all day long with other dogs. She ate breakfast and dinner then. Anyway... after i have ranted, does anyone have any suggestions? I need advice from others who have picky eaters or something! Thank you so much! |

| Hi and welcome to YT. I think so many of our Yorkies are picky eaters. Sometimes Buster will just decide he no longer likes the kibble he has been eating. I do add a little people food to get him more interested but it is always healthy not cooked in fat etc. food like eggs, garbanzo beans, green beans etc. I do switch his food around but I have him on probiotics so his stomach usually handles food changes well. My trainers said put a couple of treats in with the food to motivate them to be interested. Hopefully others will also add their suggestions.

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you very much Yorkie talk has been very informative! After exploring some more on YT i have discovered that it does really seem to be a common problem! I am fairly new to the world of yorkies. My oldest Stella is only 1 year old and my other baby is only 16 weeks. I always had Golden Retrievers growing up and they always have been hearty eaters. Not that i expected a 6lbs yorkie to be like a 65lbs Golden but the whole finicky eating thing is new to me. lol. i shall work to apply some of these suggestions I just bought Stella some florazyme EFA to see if maybe part of the problem is digestion and also to help her skin and coat (she has some minor dry skin on her behind) So i think if i do switch her food around some that should help her little tummy to cope. Thanks again! |

| I always called Ziva a picky eater until the vet said she was overweight and needed to lose more than a pound! (I thought she was just a short sturdy dog) We had to cut her food amount down and exercise more- She begs for her food now and can't eat it fast enough, she is also more active! (she gets a tablespoon of kibble /am and 1/4 cup/ pm and it has taken 4 months to lose 3/4 lb.- guess she wasn't picky, just not hungry-I was overfeeding her. |

| I am sure you didn't. The food you have said you were feeding or trying to Yorkies is very highly rated. Buster loves to eat now but every now and then he gets very picky even about something he has loved before. My friend Linda used to live near the beach and I visited that home. I have not been to the one on Merritt Island though but she really loves it.

| I was told yesterday at a pet store that we can try adding some goat milk (they sell frozen goat milk there) to food to make the puppy eat better. And its also good for their tummy, supposedly. We haven't experimented with that, but are just adding a little bit of wet food to his kibbles. Just got Canine Caviar yesterday to try it out, but Dex didn't seem to be too excited about it this morning :-/ |

Yorkie Yakker | hmmm! Goat's milk is not something i have thought of before! I shall do some research! Thank you for the suggestions. I went on k9cuisine.com and got five bags of food samples. I got orijen, Canidae, solid gold, EVO Red Bites, and Acana. The Canidae, solid gold, and the EVO red bites she just turned her nose up at. But she seems to be liking the orijen and the Acana. Over the next few days i am going to experiment and see if she keeps eating it! Thanks for the help! |

| Gracie is a picky eater also. When she was a puppy I was afraid she was going to starve herself to death. I actually found YT while looking for dog food recipes. I finally got her on a commercial raw diet and she started to eat regularly. She is still not a huge eater but I can get her to eat her daily requirement. Do you think since she ate so well when she was boarded that maybe she needs more exercise? I know Gracie seems to eat much better when she has had her daily walks. |

Yorkie Yakker | oh wow! Stella really ate a lot when she was a young puppy. I guess it just changed with age. That is scary when you can't get a pup to eat! I wonder why yorkies are so unenthusiastic about food. I do think it is possible that less exercise is contributing to her not wanting to eat as much. She played all day long from about 7:30 a.m-5 or 6 at night with other dogs when i boarded her. I have a really nice park near my house that during the spring and summer and fall we walk at nearly every day but the weather has been really bad lately, so walks have been hit and miss. The last time she went on a considerable walk was last Tuesday. I am not sure that exercise is the main thing though. She has a 16 week old little sister that keeps her busy playing and even after she goes on a long walk she is not always interested in food. Ideally, i would like to walk her twice a day. I love taking her and my other baby Sony on walks. It is relaxing and bonding time. lol. I will try to get her some more exercise over the next couple of days and see if there is any change. |

Yorkie Yakker | I started adding Blue Buffalo's blue's stew to stella's dry kibble.... worked awesome for the first few days and finally thought that i had found the solution. Well, much to my frustration, she has seemed to decide it isn't great anymore. I am going nuts! lol. I don't want to keep switching for fear that i will make matters worse with her becoming even more picky! |
