Wormshield Completely forgetting to refill on heartworm meds, I had to resort getting WormShield. Is there anyone that uses this? I don't feel comfortable giving my 5.5 lbs yorkie one entire pill seeing how it's for dogs up to 25 lbs. I was thinking maybe giving half a pill would be better. Any thoughts? I use Interceptor but seeing how that's not available right now, I'm hoping to get buy time this month till I get something better. Called every vet around my area but either they don't have it or won't sell to none patient. Is there any online store that still has Interceptor in stock??? |
hmm, i never heard of of wormsheild.. i dont know of any place that has interceptor available. i think it is supposed to be coming out in jan 2013.. i can't advise you on the dosage though, did you ask your vet about it ? |
The doc my furbies usually sees went to lunch so asked another doc and he said "shouldn't be a problem". Wormshield is a brand Banfield provides. I know my bigger one don't have problem with this brand since I've given it to him before without any issue but my 5.5 lbs furbie's always been on interceptor so I'm not sure how she'll react to this. Since Interceptor isn't available, what else would you guys recommend? Heartgard plus? Iverhart Max? |

I would use heartguard until interceptor is back in stock. |
Ok... So Heartgard or Revolution? I see Rev is for both heartworm and flea/tick... Heartgard.. says "up to 25 lbs". Zoey's only 5.5 lbs so wouldn't that be bit overkill or is it safe? I gave Zoey half a tab of the Wormshield last night which also says "up to 25 lbs". I also saw someone suggesting Iverhart which seems to be a generic for Heartgard... I'm leaning towards Heartgard since I don't want to give something that has both heartworm and flea/tick at the same time. I'm always paranoid about overdosing on meds. Any thoughts?? |

Now i am trying to back on the meds overload so i use k9 advantix as needed and switched to plain heartgard ( i dont think he needs to be treated for internal parasites every month). I give him the whole treat though. ( i think you are supposed to , ask your vet about it ). Iverhart is cheaper but i dont like it , it gave my dogs diarheaa. The heartgard does not..... |
I thought this was an interesting article on heartworm meds. Any thought? HEARTWORM FACTS, THE TRUTH ABOUT HEARTWORM |
yes , i have read that article before . It does make some good points but personally i am not willing to risk my dogs health by not giving heartworm prevention.. where i live we have a bad mosquito problem. I give heartguard 9 months and every march a heartworm test.. |
I am not willing to risk heart worms because the treatment it very risky for small dogs. Its kinda funny our first dog when I was a kid took monthly heart worm meds but when she got older she had to be put to sleep because of a disk in her back that broke and our second dog who never had heart worm meds (do not recommend this it was my parents choice just because of money and remembering to do it) at 12 had to be put to sleep because of heart failure and cancer. So I don't think there is a major impact or effect on the dog and I think a dog on prevention is not more likely to have problems. Dogs don't live long lives like humans so when they say it may effect them later on in life not sure how much later on it could be its not like they live to be 100. I will never not use prevention on my dog. |
Thanks for all the inputs. I feel like vets sometimes gloss over a bit when it comes to meds and certain treatments so I always like to get inputs from actual fur mommies/daddies. I live in Northern VA. This winter is supposed to be really cold so I don't think we'll have any mosquito problems. With that said.. maybe I can skip December/January treatment and wait for Interceptor to come back. But I will buy Heartgard in case there's longer delay. January is their full exam date so I think it'll be ok. They get full check ups twice a year. (I think they have better health plan than most ppl I know. LOL) I've read in passing that Interceptor might not come back? That an upgrade version would take its place? Any of you heard/read this? Btw.. Oscar/Dream88, I just love those pics of your furbies!!!!! |
