YT 1000 Club Member | The 3 Year Rabies Inoculation I'm having a little trouble understanding just how this works. My Vet tells me that "he" has to have a history of 3 years of continuous inoculations, before he can "issue" the 3 year tag. The way it seems is that, is there some sort of resistance built up, where if less than 3 years, the Dog is vulnerable. And after that, it's ok for a 3 year run without any inoculation. Is that right ? What I don't understand is... Why does it take so long, and... Why does it have to be with the same Vet ? Is there a difference {stronger meds) in the 3 year, than the standard 1 year ? I trust my Vet, but... This smells fishy. I think it's just a gimmick to get someone to stick with the same Vet for a longer period. (not that I have any reason to change...at this time)

| In Florida(at least) it is the exact same vaccine. My vet told me that Curri could not (per Fl law) get the 3 year vac until her SECOND inoculation.....also sounds like a gimmick to me...... (same shot down to the batch number) I question any and all vacs given to my pups these days.....I feel we are severely over vaccinating our animals and a lot of vets know better but are unwilling to "un~line" their pockets and stand up for our pets

| Here is a link to the laws in Texas regarding rabies vaccines. https://www.dshs.state.tx.us/idcu/he.../laws/vaccine/ Are you sure he was not referring to DHPP?

| The 3 year and 1 year vaccine is the exactly the same, the only difference is the label. This was done by the manufacturer because some states required the vaccine to be administered at one year intervals and some allowed the three year vaccine. To get around this the manufacturer just changed the label. You don't have to go to the same vet to establish some sort of record with him. As long as you have the pups records you can go to any vet. | I'd understood they are one and the same vaccine with only different manufacturing labels, too. Your vet can compare the two dosages and drug names and see that if that is really the case.

| I think it's strange how much things change from vet to vet & state to state. ZoE had her first rabies shot as a puppy, then when she was almost 1 1/2 years old, she was due for her next rabies....that next shot was a 3 year shot. So she definately didn't have 3 continuous years of innoculations.

| That doesn't make any sense. Mine got their first rabies vaccine as a pup, and when it was time for check-up, vaccines, etc one year later, they got the three year vaccine. I'm in Fort Bend County, and most cities here require the puppy vaccine followed by a booster one year later and then every three years after that ... unless you are in the city of Rosenberg. Their law still requires a yearly vaccine.

| Makes no sense? Typically, a pup receives a rabies vaccine (anywhere between 3 months - 6 months depending on laws, etc) and then they get one more around one year old. From then on, most places are every 3 years. There are SOME states that require every year, but it's not as many. Never heard of doing every year for 3 years and THEN getting the "3 year vaccine". As stated above, it's the same exact vaccine.

YT 1000 Club Member | sugarmamma. I'm hearing one or two or three years... This is crazy ! ladyjane, Thanks for that link, and no, it definitely was Rabies. jp4m2, Thanks for the links. My Vet told me that "HE" (his clinic) must have done the inoculations. yorkietalkjilly, Ok, same vaccine, but, what about the cost. I bet they charge more for the 3 year. Haven't checked that out yet with My Vet. KazzyK810. I don't understand the State (differences) issue. Could there be more risk in one state than another ? OwnedByJezebel, Live in Houston proper. But MOVE OVER, I'm thinking about a move. Britster, My understanding is that on the third year, that innoculation can be the 3year.

| Your vet is pulling the wool over your eyes with HIS protocol! Pup gets first rabies shot, then a year later, gets second rabies shot, then you go to 3 years. When I transferred to a new vet years ago, I brought all my dogs records with me, and they took right up at the place we left of with vaccinations, and it was another 2 years before I had to do rabies vaccines again. So this is just crap YOUR vet is deciding he can do to ensure he gets as much $$$$ as possible when he finds someone that is aware of the 3 year protocol on rabies....you would be surprised at the number of people that would show up every 6 months for shots if their vet told them they had to do that...trusting and clueless! So when someone shows up that is aware of the 3 year protocol, now he has to comeup with something else to keep you coming. I would tell him I had checked with the State of Texas and what they say about the 3 year rabies protocol and it is my understanding.....". And then, if he was not willing to go with the laws of the state, I would change vets....I dont like people to try to lie to me for their own financial gain..... | Oh That's one I haven't heard before....lol. First and foremost, the law in your locality needs to be followed. No need to do any more than that. Second thing to be considered would be this: http://www.aahanet.org/PublicDocumen...Guidelines.pdf Maybe ask your vet why he doesn't comply with the AAHA Vaccine Guidelines and then find a vet who does...

| 3 Year Rabies Interesting Thread. I'm in Florida, and after completing the first series of Da2pp and initial 1 year rabies, all of my Yorkies on their yearly immunization time can receive the 2 year Da2pp and a 3 year rabies. The local County License must be renewed every year at a cost of $5 per neutered pet and $35 per UN-neutered pet. The cost savings is a few dollars rather than having it every year, the license cost is the same. However, after reading this thread, it would seem to me that if the immunization 1 year and 3 year is the same dose, how did it get to be good for three years The county here requires rabies once a year which I didn't know, and I did get several of mine the 3 year, so that should prove interesting this year. |
