please help is eukanuba bad? when i got my puppy they said that this was the best food should i change to something else becouse of the whole i ams thing? |
food I would not change anythign right now..let your puppy adjust to her new home and in a few weeks you can decide on a diet you feel better about...FYI I have fed my Yorkie Eukanuba for many years..they love it and are very healthy, so I give them what they want to eat. |
I give Eukanuba to Jade and Mitsou . Nathan will start with it too . |
Bailey was on Eukanuba the first 10 months,, he loved it and I never had any problems.. It was on here I learned there were BETTER formulas out there. so I switched to just have a more all natural food,, and I did notice He didn't poop as much on the all natural brand.. he went from about 5 times a day to 2-3..which I was happy about. |
Natural Choice Nutro lamb and rice formula Ingredients Lamb Meal, Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Natural Flavors, Rice Gluten, Dried Egg Product, Dried Beet Pulp, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine, Dried Kelp (source of Iodine), Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Ferrous Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Vitamin A Supplement, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid. So I went to Eukanuba to print out their ingred. and I couldn't find any on their site...hmmmm that's interesting... I just wanted to compare the two, and now I cant... Oh well if anyone else can, post it please. |
This is a link to a site to that lets you compare up to 4 dog foods for ingredients. You can also do cat food somewhere else on the site. It does not have all types or brands but quite a few. http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=comp-wiz |
Many vets will tell you Eukanuba is the best. It's not even close. It has corn in it and lots of fillers rather than good healthy stuff for your pup. YorkieRose is right, don't change anything right now. Wait a few weeks or even months, and when you change make sure you change VERY slowly. Over a week or two. This will also give you some time to read ingredients and do some research to pick a great food. Here's some awesome brands: Canidae Chicken Soup Innova California Natural Natural Balance (ONLY the Ultra Premium) Wellness ETA: Here's a great website that will help you decipher ingredients (which you can usually find online, you don't have to buy a bag :-) ) http://www.sniksnak.com/ac/petfooddefinitions.html |

However, I am currently taking an equine nutrition class and I didn't think anything I learned in there would apply to dog nutrition but it did. There's this whole complicated equation for figuring out Crude Protein and Digestable Energy but some dog food companies do not list DE (digestable energy) on their label. But they are required by law to tell you if you ask so call and ask them. That is what I'm going to do with Iams. I like Wysong/Solid Gold brand because it is quality food and cruelty free. I am going to compare Wysong Maintenance Diet to Eukanuba's and see what the DE & CP are and how they compare in value. I will post it here when I find out the answer regardless. |

Daphne my pom has always been on Eukenuba.. from the start! She's very happy, healthy and loves her food. Taylah was on Chicken soup, but I switched her to Eukenuba after bringing her home, then learned all the things about Iams/Eukenuba.. but after much thougth and consideration and the results *I* have had with Daphne being on it and now Tay... I have decided to keep them both on it. Yes, I feel SO bad for the poor animals and what they do, but like others have told me, *lots* of companies do the testing as well and honestly we may not know who does it and does what... My girls love the stuff, and are 100% healthy and have had NO problems so far, so sicne they are happy and healthy, that makes me happy and I decided to keep them wtih it. yeah, I feel super bad for buying it knowng that Im *supporting* what they are doing.. but I have to kinda try to look past that and think of MY girls and how happy and healthy they are on this.. Hope I don't get bashed, as that's not what I wanted to start--but wanted to put my input, as my girls are both on it. |
I personally would not feed Eukanuba, because of the whole IAMS/Eukanuba thing, and it contains corn which may or may not cause allergies in some dogs. If your dog does not seem to be having a problem with it now I would just switch the food if you want to when the puppy moves into eating adult food...This is what I did with Bruce, as I was switching from puppy to adult formula (you know doing the whole gradually blending and moving them off the puppy food thing) I switched him from Royal Canin to Innova small bites! He loves the innova and I love the ingredients! Personally I would select a food that uses only human grade ingredients, and does not contain soy or corn. |

I have to comment on one thing you said, however - "honestly we may not know who does it and does what" We actually do know that there are companies who do not do what Iams does. There are companies whose food is tasted by volunteers, kennels and shelters. They do not have special labs where dogs live 24/7 and are experimented on like Iams does. Here is a link with the companies that do not experiment, fund experimentation or hold dogs in labs to taste their food: http://www.caringconsumer.com/page/petfoodpocket.pdf or here if you don't like PDFs: http://www.iamscruelty.com/notTested.asp My local feedstore carries Newman's Own, Wysong, Solid Gold and (I think) Natural Balance. You can also buy these foods online or through catalogs. I suspect down the road more companies will take the humane route and stop their unnecesary animal labs. I hope anyway. |
How did you hear or read about Iams/eukanuba? I haven't heard about it and recently purchased eukanuba. Thanks |
it's certainly not the best. I used Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and rice Puppy but I switched to Royal Canin Puppy 33. It has smaller peices and is a great food. I changed foods because Nutro was I thought was drying out Tiggers skin, since being on RC it's improved a lot and he's a lot shiner. |
